Crazy walking

Okay, This is crazy...One day I wore My HRM and walked 2 laps around the gym, and then jogged one lap then go back to walking 2 laps...my friend and I did this for approx. 30 minutes...and i burned calories.....and i was happy...then yesterday I power-walked and in the same amount of time i burned more power walking than i did with the jogging....is this right? or am I crazy...

    So you walked 2 laps then ran i lap for 30 minutes? So you only ran for a third of the time. So power walking for the same amount of time will be more consistent pace and also HRMs are not very accurate for anything other than steady state cardio so the stopping and starting may have put some errors in so yes it's possibe

    You only marginally increased your effort (both distance and pace) when jogging one lap, so you shouldn't expect great increases in calorie burn.

    Depends on how much effort was put into the regular walking vs the power walking.

    30 seconds of jogging doesnt burn many more calories than 30 seconds of walking. Heck, by general numbers, a mile of walking is around 75-85 calories burned whereas running is 110-120 and that is only arond 30 cals diff for a full mile.

    The HRM does not know how far you walked/Ran - it only knows that your Heart Rate was for that exercise period .. If your HR was 'roughly' the same on both occasions then the 'estimated' work that your did would be 'roughly' the same.

    Now if you use a tracker App (Like Stava , Endo or MapMyRun for example) and also record how far you went (manually or via GPS) you would have a better estimate of the amount of Energy that you had used.

    I have seen some people jog, God love them, maybe only .1 MPH faster than they could walk so it is quite possible to get those numbers!

    I took a powerwalking class in college (a cardio class was required for all freshman, thank you!). They swore up and down that it was a better workout than running. They said the power walking never got you the forward momentum that you get with running at a faster pace. You've all seen the mall walkers who jut their hips out from side to side. That is true power walking form and supposedly works more muscle groups than running alone. Just saying what the book and the instructor claimed as truth. Not saying it's right one way or the other. It was a good workout for me at the time.
