Where are the guys?
I am just curious, I have been taking classes in my gym and I rarely see guys in them. I have taken Arm class, ABs class, classes that Use weights and calisthenics to sculpt and shape muscles. Cardio Tai boxing, and Zumba. I see mostly women in the classes. Even the Tai boxing class I have only seen 2 or 3 guys and they never returned....Is that because men like to work out on their own? I am just curious....

If you are working out towards the front of the class, you may just not notice the men, who, if they're smart, are at the back of the class.:happy:0

No gym shaming me! I want to look like a lady with curves, not like a bulky man.

It's because there are no classes for heavy lifting, and most men like to lift heavy for the obvious benefits. Also, our metabolic capacity is much higher than a woman's, so if we are cutting or losing weight, then we can just do it by eating less instead of doing cardio classes.0 -

That's literally the only reason I go to hot yoga every Tuesday0 -
Doing compound movements like *kitten* to grass squats, bench pressing, doing curls for the girls and trying to gain strength and muscle.0

^this, classes are for chicks lol.0 -
it's caveman science.
women are more social - we like to work together and talk while we do it. b/c we were the gatherers, so we were in the forest and not right next to each other - talking kept tabs on where everyone was and also scared off predators.
men are less social - b/c they were the hunters. little chit chat, it could scare off the prey. focus driven. but liking to be able to see each other and still help each other.
our brains were wired for this to this day. i think that's why it's so quiet in the weights section (where it is, usually more men) and it's mostly women in classes.0 -
Thanks for replying! Some of you are really funny :-)
no, I don't go to Curves, no Lucille Roberts, I think a gym is more like a gym with men work out in it, and it inspires me to work with weights ( although I am very intimidate to go the weight section)
Well, there are 2 guys always in my Zumba class and they are fabulous!0 -
They have classes in gyms?
And MFP tells us that men who take classes are nasty old mysoginistic creeps0 -

why not take the heavy weight in the class? one sure can take 20, 30lb dumbbells in arm class right?0 -

lol at first i thought you were a guy.
i was like, are you complaining?
you had to take a studio art at my college. it came down to music appreciation (not sure how thats a stuido art) or modern dance.
i heard that there was actually home work in the music class, so i took the dance lol
i was the only guy in the class. getting dates out of there was like shooting fish in a barrel. best decision of my life lol0 -

I go to Goodlife and I do like some of the classes like Bodypump but more often than not I'm the only guy there.
Most of the classes are cardio heavy.
Guys like to press weights and body sculpt and women for the most part are trying to get lean so there are different goals. (just my opinion)0 -
I believe in a classless society.0

Well sheet, that explains a lot of things then.
There's quite a few guys in the classes I take at my gym. I've done kickboxing, RIPPED, Zumba, bootcamp classes but it is still predominantly women.0 -
In the free weight section with the iron. Where else would we be??0
-
Yeah most of the classes I take are female dominated (minus the whips and leather) I was the only guy in my psychology class way back when I was in college too and was asked EVERY single time for 'what's male opinion on this...' I think I would have rather been taken hostage and tortured than answer most of the time.
Bringing it back to the gym I tend to avoid eye contact and look at the floor, not go too far forwards or too far back in the class, don't get sweat on people, etc etc.
Basically I probably look like Rain Man.0 -
Yeah, guys don't take classes. It's the man gene that makes us feel like we don't need anyone to tell us how to workout.
Luckily working out is pretty simple, so for once we're kind of right. But you have fun at Booty BootCamp.
This is probably why most of the men that lift in my gym lift like retards, because they're emotionally incapable of learning from someone else.
That's not a man thing by the way, it's a 10 year old child thing.
Hope this helps.0 -
Classes seem to be aimed at the girls - most are dance orientated, and ALL have music
It has nothing to do with thinking we don't need anyone telling us what to do; I'm quite happy taking instruction from my mate who knows his stuff, or from the PTs if I need a bit of advice on form
I'll warm up for deadlifts by doing lighter deadlifts.... not by dancing to Shakira0 -

You're making the fundamental mistake by assuming that dancing to Shakira is less intense than your deadlift warmups, when I'm certain nearly any ballet performer would easily tell you that their routine is significantly more brutal than your typical 3 day a week gym warrior's routine.
In fact, the mistake you're making is assuming that they work towards the same end.
As a person who was a gymnast for eight long years. Doing silly twirly things on bars stops being cutesy as soon as you feel your muscles screaming from being in a front lever for more than 10 seconds.0 -

I'm making no mistake at all - I have done a Zumba class, various aerobics classes, body pump, body attack etc etc. I'm well aware that you can put as much or as little into dancing as you want.
Fact is that most girls like to dance - hence the popularity of the classes. Most guys in my experience don't. I certainly don't.
Also I think it's better to warm up using the muscles that I'm about to stress0
