Now that it's summer, I see all these posts of people logging their gardening as exercise. I love to garden, but I've never logged it. Do you think people are doing this just so they can eat more? I just consider it a chance to be outside and enjoying the weather. sometimes I'm out for a couple of hours sweating up a storm, but enjoying it. I'm not being negative just curious

I log things as exercise if I wear my HRM, and am really working hard. I mow my lawn with a reel mower, that takes a couple of hours, so that gets logged. Digging up new beds, moving rocks and gravel, I wear my HRM and log. Weeding and general gardening I don't log. It's pretty much personal preference, I think.

I periodically garden, as well, and sometimes I log it because I sit in an office all day and it may be my only physical activity of the day (I always under estimate the time, though). I do not do it to eat back the calories, for me it is just to keep track of what I did other than sit on that particular day!

I log it but I have to do everything by hand and I only log half the time, much as with any other exercise I log. :) But I'm pretty lazy in general, so I get pretty sweaty!

I take care of my garden every day, and no, I would never even think to log it as exercise. In the Spring whenever I pulled up the grass, dug up the ground, tilled and laid down new soil and compost....I believe I logged that. It was probably a much better workout than my actual workouts.

I think it depends on what you consider "gardening." Pulling a few weeds or holding the hose while it sprays over your plants might be gardening to some people. I dig, till, plant, replant, transplant, and weed by hand, and, even on a cool day, I'm covered in sweat from the hands-on work. It's probably a better all-over workout than some that I do at the gym, quite honestly.
That said, I do log it, but I cut the time down by about a third. I also don't use it as an excuse to overindulge. It's just a reminder to myself that "exercise" doesn't always have to be separate from my everyday life, and can include something I truly love doing.

Thanks for the feedback, I guess it is just personal preference. If I golf 18 holes, walking I log that, and on top of my other exercise I did that day I can easily burn 1500 calories. I wouldn't dream of eating back the calories, I just log it to say that I did it.

I log my gardening once a week, but it counts for all the gardening I do for the week. I go out on the weekend and clean everything up, weed, move pots, etc. Plus I water every day, and I don't have a hose. Watering for me consists of at least 4 trips around the house, carrying a giant water pot. No it's not a lot, but it adds up to about 3 hours per week. I log maybe an hour.

I've been logging my gardening as I'm completely digging over and redoing most of the garden this summer. This involves some fairly hefty work with a pickaxe, shovel and garden fork. I don't log it when I'm just weeding or watering.
