I was wondering what is "better" for you: regular instant oatmeal or regular instant cream of wheat?
I was originally eating instant oatmeal, but then I switched to cream of wheat. I know cream of wheat has 0g of fat, but is there a difference besides what is on the labels?

Neither really. Regular oatmeal or steel cut oats are better for you, instant anything is processed and have added sugars so not much better than a bowl of Frosted Flakes!0

Neither - don't do instant in the packets, do the 2 1/2 minute cook!!!0

I wish I could cook it, but I only have access to a microwave in the morning.
So if I do get the regular stove top, is oatmeal or cream of wheat better? I know wheat is better then white flour , but I never compared it to oatmeal.0 -
Eat the one you enjoy more, and if you have time, opt for the cook and serve version of either. Or give grits a shot, you may like that as well.0

Quaker has a non-process 2-minute cook version called "quick cooking". You add a cup of water or half water/half milk and microwave for 2 minutes.0

If you're up to it, buy the slow-cook oatmeal and make it the night before (or make a few days worth and put into single serving containers). Keep it in the fridge and microwave it in the morning! I love Irish oatmeal - it's my favorite.0

Just so you know, you can take old fashion oatmeal and cook them just the way you do instant without the extra calories.
I eat both myself, but oat meal is the best overall in my opinion.0 -
Thanks for all the tips... although it doesn't sound like one is better than the other.0

im a HUGE cream of wheat fan! LOL I was curious and did a little research, anyways cream of wheat isnt all that good for you. Oat meal is probably the best. what i do though is i buy a hot cereal called red river, it reminds me of COW but is a little grainiery and it is VERY good for you. If i do eat COW i make sure to add a tablespoon or more of flax to get some fiber0

I will definitely look for that! I prefer the taste of cream of wheat as well. Red River sounds like a good alternative... and I will keep the fiber addition in mind! Thanks so much!0 -
For me oatmeal is more filling. I take regular old oats, put in some splenda and cinnamon and just add hot water. Let it sit for 2 minutes and it's delicious. I also sometimes smash up a banana and mix it into the plain oats for some variety.0

Cream of wheat is awesome! And forgive me but I add just a teaspoon of brown sugar. Yummy!0

I vote for old fashioned oatmeal. I add cinnamon, a teaspoon of brown sugar, a tablespoon of walnuts, and a teaspoon of flax seed. Healthy and tasty too!0

If you have never tried Oat Bran, give that a try. I think it tastes a lot like Cream of Wheat and it is healthier!0

I believe oats are much better for you nutritionally than cream of wheat. But, I also believe that "instant" oats probably have less nutritional value than less processed oats.
That being said, I don't have time to cook my oats every morning, so I make a big pot on Sunday and reheat individual amounts each morning in the microwave. 1 cup of dry steel cuts, 4 cups water, 1 tsp salt. Oven @ 325. Cook for 1 or 2 hours until water absorbed....I stir every now and then to make sure its not sticking to the bottom.
In the am when I reheat I add a shake of cinnamon, a shake of minimally processed unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/2 a TB of butter, 1/3 cup frozen wild blueberries and 1 TB Raw Honey nmmmmmmmmmmmm!
This is a fun food blog, Kath eats oats every morning and she makes something she calls over night oats, she also has a tab on the site called Tribute To Oats: http://www.katheats.com/.
have fun, eat OATS, they are so good for you, happy eating

I think Oatmeal is better for you; though cow tastes great, quick cook on either loses nutritional value, the microwave works great with either; I was a die hard milk fan, but switched to Almond milk ; after about a week I actually preferred it, and now drink the vanilla (sweetened) flavor, and besides drinking it, I put in on my cereal , oatmeal , and cow- it gives it a sweet flavor , and don't need anything else. This has really helped me lose weight , almost at goal, will continue with app to help maintain!0

They have different nutritional profiles. Neither is inherently bad or better.. depends on your overall "diet". Eat whichever you like.0

Cream of wheat has very little fiber or protein; oatmeal is the better choice. You can cook regular oats just like instant so there's no need to buy expensive little packets.0
