I asked my Zumba instructor today how many calories we burned, and she said 500-600 but we worked for only 45 minutes (intense I was out of breath every song haha). Does anyone know if she's right?

Depending on the intensity of the class, it's possible. I burn anywhere from 700-1000 calories in an hour according to my HRM.

It's all based on the intensity level, but also your fitness level and size.

Well, for me that's about right ... in a 45 minute class, I usually burn around 600 - 650 (according to my HRM).

For a full hour, It's more like 800 - 1000. Then again, I'm still a pretty big guy, so your mileage may vary.
  • i log it under aerobics, high impact which puts it just under 600 cals for me. i'll have a better idea when i get to wear my HRM to a class :)

I googled something like "zumba calories burned" and the prevailing wisdom said to count it as "light aerobics". When I did this, I came out with about 500 calories.

Try selecting "light aerobics" from the MFP database, put in 45 minutes, and see what you come up with.

For me (and maybe it's that I'm fit or maybe I don't put enough oomph into it) no matter the class, I've never gotten over about 560 calories in an hour ... So your instructor might be right!

And I'm often times panting and always soaked.

I always log mine as "Dancing, aerobic, ballet or modern, twist". It usually comes up with about 400 calories for 45 minutes, so I think that is fairly comparable.
  • Take a look at http://www.zumbacalories.com enter your weight, workout duration & intensity and it will calculate how many calories you have burned based on average metabolic rates
