Disappointed in myself

I have been sticking by MFP religiously for almost a year. I plateaued after Christmas after losing 40 lbs. I tried sticking with it the best I could. I work out 5-6 days a week. I am also on alot of medication that makes it harder to lose the weight. Now after over a year on this journey I have completely went off the rails. I haven't logged my food since Thursday, partly because I knew I was eating poorly. I have gained back almost 10 lbs.I have so much going on anymore that it's hard to always be focused on food. Not to mention the fact that it's costly to have to fix separate meals all of the time. When you're trying to make it stretch at the grocery store, it's hard to justify having to buy all these ingredients that you know that no one in the house but you will use. But I know I have to refocus. I have worked too hard to go back. Just not sure how to start over.

Don't be so hard on yourself. We all have days (or weeks in my case) that we just can't find that motivation. Dig deep and push yourself forward. You CAN do it!
I understand how challenging planning your menu can be, but it can be done. I have 2 boys, 21 and 14, and they are huge junk food eaters. Now, being boys, it hasn't really affected them yet, but I started thinking about how I was teaching them to be unhealthy. So, just recently, I told the boys that as soon as the junk food was gone, no more was coming in on a regular basis. Keep fruit and peanut butter in your house, along with maybe some triscuits or low fat graham crackers if you have children. I promise you they will adjust. Also, I have tried to plan my meals with a lean protein, carb (a good one), and a non-starcy veggie and I serve them on smaller plates. It makes me feel good to see a full plate! LOL On the weekends, allow yourself to have a cheat meal. As long as you don't go over 1500 calories in one meal, you should be fine.

I feel ya. I have been bad for the last week as was staying with my boyfriends parents which means booze and loads of amazing food. Luckily only gained 3lbs. The important thing is getting back on the saddle. It's the difference between what I have done on all previous diets and success. Whatever happens just pick yourself up. Can you eat what your family eats just in smaller portions? then you won't have to but sperate ingredients or feel deprived/excluded?0

Portion control has always been hard for me. And the fact that I'm on a low dose of steroids daily for my arthritis doesn't help. I can be fine controlling it for a while, and then it gets thrown out the window. I think I'm just going to have to go back in my food log to see how I used to eat. What was working for me. See if I can get back to that place again.0

Make the decision to do it and then do it. It's your choice how this goes. It's within your control to decide.

As far as the grocery store, feed everyone the same thing - cooking 2 different meals is too much work. Losing weight is about being in a calorie deficit, so just eat smaller portions of what you feed the family. Weigh/measure/log all the food every day.

We all fall down, it's how you pick yourself up and dust yourself off that counts!
I agree on the cost, I don't care what others say. ex= I can feed my 2 teenage kids and i off of a $3 or $4 pizza, but to buy chicken (or any other lean meat) and then veggies etc.... adds up to more than just $3 for dinner!
Just do the best you can and try and exercise.

Hi Linda. As others have written, don't be so hard on yourself. I'm kind of at the same point .... a very long and frustrating plateau. If I don't eat enough, I get ravenously hungry and if I eat enough I don't lose weight. It's a tough situation to be in. When I get frustrated or in this stuck state, I just keep on pushing.0

I also have two sons at home (20 and 21) who like their junk food. Most of it does not tempt me at all and I coupon so I tend to get it very cheap. I do fix most of the meals so that is easy to control. They love fruit and peanut butter so that is always around these days. My oldest has been coming to the farmers market with me on Saturdays so he usually helps pick out fruits and veggies for the week. This weekend was pineapple, lots of strawberries (end of the season here so a bunch got froze) and peaches (which I have since made two pans of cobbler). The youngest even eats my skinny cow ice cream sandwiches. The oldest loves to grill so I am making use of that also in terms of meats and veggies.0

Probably one of the best things you can do to get yourself back on track is to post here and get a dialogue going with others who've experienced the same thing. We've all had slip ups, plateaus and guilt. The sharing process can take away some of that pain and redirect it into motivation :flowerforyou:
The good thing is that you've caught yourself after only 10 pounds to the plus...think of how many people say they gained it all back 6 months later. I know I've heard that one a lot. Be proud of yourself for owning up to it and saying you're going to get back on track.
Summer is an easier time to lose weight for many people (if you stay away from graduation parties and BBQs ; ) so rededicate yourself to getting outside and walking with a friend, riding a bike or taking the kids to the pool...drink lots of healthy liquids like ice water, infused teas, protein drinks...and like gypsyrunner said, feed everyone the same thing. Your family will benefit from it as much as you. Grilled chicken breast instead of chicken nuggets or healthy sandwich wraps instead of cheeseburgers, for example. The only difference is that you'll be weighing, measuring and logging your foods and they won't.
Remember to watch your salt intake and avoid processed foods. Anything you can do to help you move the scale down is a win!0 -
Thank you all for the words of motivation. It really does help. I think now that the month is winding down, and all that is left is to get family to their dr.'s appointments, it should be a little easier. I've been very stressed all month, so I know that doesn't help. Thank goodness for Planet Fitness! I think that has been what has kept me sane. Going to the farmer's market next week0
