What is insulin sensitivity?

Despite using those words, I'm not looking to start a fight...

...and I realize that saying that is probably the easiest way to start a fight around here. But it's not my intention. Honest. :flowerforyou:

In many threads, posters will mention they have insulin sensitivity, which affects what foods they can eat and how fast they lose.

None of my friends has ever used this term, so MFP was really the first place I've run across it.

1) Does anyone have a good definition (keeping in mind the whole "let's not start a fight" thing)? Maybe a link to a web page that explains this accurately?

2) Is this the same thing as "carb sensitivity"? (Another term I see some MFPers use.)

3) Is there a test for insulin sensitivity (or carb sensitivity, if it's not the same thing)? Or is it the kind of thing you notice about yourself and you don't need a test? (For example, I don't need a test to tell me I'm allergic to wine. I am, so I don't drink it.)

4) Is there a good explanation anywhere for how insulin sensitivity affects how the body processes carbs? Ignore this if covered by 1, 2, or 3.

Thanks for any help.
