The ice diet

Just saw this ridiculousness on the NEWS.

What do you think of it? I was certain it was going to say dr. Oz invented it. Lol.

    Well, I GUESS.

I mean, technically, yeah. When you eat and drink cold foods, there is a very very slight increase in energy expenditure to bring them up to temp with your body. But, like dude said, he maxed out at 160 calories per 32 ounces of ice....that's a LOT of ice chewing for the equivalent of a third of a pound per week.

Plus, you'll probably lose an extra few pounds when you destroy your teeth chewing all that ice and you have to go on a liquid diet for a few days while you get a bunch of crowns. So there's an upside he didn't consider, too.

The guy is forgetting basic physiology, which is that when the body is cold, it first tries to minimize heat loss, rather than create new heat (which is costly). Minimizing heat loss happens by constricting skin capillaries and reducing blood flow to the extremities. So no, eating ice doesn't burn 160 calories.
Dr. Brian C. Weiner, an assistant professor at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, developed it while he was looking to lose weight himself. So far, Weiner says, he's lost more than 50 pounds following the odd protocol.

No, he lost the 50 lbs by eating less and/or exercising more. The article admitted he replaced high-calorie ice cream for lower-calorie Italian ices. That's probably a 160 calorie reduction right there.
