Why must most Challenge Leaders make it difficult

I dont understand why MOST of the "leaders" of the Challenges on this site have to make it difficult to (1) Join. (2) Remain in the
Challenges..

Seriously.. We want people to be able to join in. This site is to help people lose weight. How are you helping them if you cant let them join in late or not. Ive went thru many posts for "challenges" and Ive noticed this and it makes me sick to my stomach. Why do we have to be so strict with these groups. I dont mean to be a *****, but they should be available to whoever wants to be in them. And they shouldnt be limited. I know some of them if you dont participate you are thrown from the group, Are you serious? How is that helping the individual? There are people who DO have lives and DONT always have time to be posting. I am a leader of a group and I am a VERY understanding person. I DONT make it hard on those who want to. And those who are afraid to because they have advantages I always tell them to be honest with the group they are always more than welcomed..

We need to stop making everything impossible for everyone.. This isnt high school folks. If you cant get along in the group, maybe the group shouldnt be there to begin with. Quit being so damn strict and picky. Have fun with it.. Thats what it should be all about. Sorry I had to speak my mind.

Feel free to comment if youd like. I hate rude and picky people..

I'm in my own group! And I like the company I keep. If I get out of line I knock the *kitten* out of me.
  • this is why i havent even attempted to join any challenges on here. if i need a challenge i can always monitor my progress my self or have a friend or family member help me. its clique-y just like high school and i graduated already. i dont need that crap all over again.

I dont care how often people come back to th message board... i totally understand.. Im not here to be a ***** about it.. Im here to bring some fun with it..

I have been blessed to have joined challenges with wonderful individuals, and trust me, I'm in PLENTY of challenges!! So I don't have a first hand experience on mfp, but in life, I know all too well.

Good for you for telling them what's up :flowerforyou:

As in all things, people are people and will always have those who don't look at the big picture. They learned that in school.

I'm really sorry you've felt like that. I've been a part of a few challenges, haven't started any myself but I've semi helped lead them after the original poster disappeared. I've always welcomed new members, even if it's Week 19 of a 20 week challenge. I have a 20 lbs in 20 Weeks challenge going on right now. It's week 2, but we'd LOVE more members! Just search for the post on the Motivation board "20 in 20: Week 2". I'm also in a Lose 10 Pounds By Christmas challenge, week 4. They'll be a new post tomorrow. I don't see why people can't join a challenge partway thru. The whole point of this website is to support EVERYONE in their weight loss, not just people who join a challenge week 1. I can see where support groups are aimed towards a certain description, like people looking to lose 50+ pounds or something. But there are so many like that with every type of description that it's easy to find one you fit into :)

The only thing I have noticed is that challenges are just that, a challenge. They are usually for something specific for a designated amount of time. For example, one challenge could be exercise 3X a week and the challenge lasts for 6 weeks. Why would someone even want to join when they are already 4-5 weeks in to it? Maybe that has happened in the past to some leaders and that is why they have gotten picky in regards to certain situations. It is always best to know both sides of the story, especially before you go stirring the pot. Why not ask the leader of the challenge first before you question it???

For ladies there is the modern day pin ups.
The leader lets anyone join - we are starting week 10 now and she even does a spreadsheet of everyone's weight loss numbers and percentages =)

That's why if I open up a challenge or membership, I don't have limits on who or when someone can join. My mom lived by a motto. Do unto others as you would want done to you. I live by the same. Being left out feels like poo.

APrilVal - I pretty much agree with you, but I have found that when I have joined other challenges or groups, pretty much ALL the posts seem to stop after the first couple of days. Sometimes there will be a little spurt, but then nothing. I mean, that's not the end of the world (not worth beating people up about, that's for sure!), but then you have to wonder - what's the point?

Does anyone else find this to be the case, with groups and challenges, or is it just me?
  • I feel ya, I feel a bit hesitant about joining, cause once I go home for the weekend, I don't get on my computer, unless a 911, and I don't have a smart phone to post, so that means that my weekends aren't posted. But I am really good throughout the week. Worried about what would be said to me.....:ohwell:

I am also in the 20 in 20 Challenge and we are always welcoming new members and you can post whenever. The 20 in 20 group was for people in their 20's to lose 20lbs in 20 weeks but it has just turned into an 20lbs in 20weeks challenge. I understand why there are different groups because it is good to have the same type of goal or focus for the group but there is no reason why you can't join whenever.

Some one had mentioned why you would want to join a group half way when the challenge would be ending soon. I joined the 20 in 20 group in week 5 and now we have re-started the group for Part 2.

I started the first part of that challenge in week 5 and managed to lose 18.5 of the 20 pounds I wanted to, even with the shorter time frame. Now we are in part 2 and have lots of new members. We always welcome new people, and even those who miss weeks are definitely welcome back!

Sometimes its not always the challenge that matters.. Its the support that comes from the group.. I dont know about all of you but the group that I have we all lean on each other. When we have struggles we share them. I dont think it really matters if you join half way thru or not. Its making yourself a little more accountable for losing weight. Some people need that extra support or umph. And its sad that there are some out there who are afraid to even attempt to join a group because of how strict some of them arent. Im not bad mouthing people. im just saying they should be a little more considerate of other people. I know there are probably reasons they are like that, but still.. You do to being rude saying NO you cant join this group.. Sorry we started when its only WEEK ONE! Are you serious? Its just annoying. I dont care if you are in the last week, and someone wants to join for the support.. I know some of you may not like me for bringing it up but I have.. Because Im in an annoyed mood today, and I was annoyed when I was reading a few Posts.. So I spoke my mind.

I enjoyed your Halloween challenge and there are a couple of other challenges i've done--haven't run into the snippies but i'm sure there are a few out there. i mainly rely on my friends and a few regular posters whose forum and blog posts are funny, on-target and inspiring--some all at the same time. I can't join a few i've seen due to my medical conditions but i do root for my friends who participate. And i appreciate those who give us a heads up and tell it like it is!
