Are smoothies worth the sugar?

I imagine this is relevant to most smoothie recipes, but the specific one I'm wondering about is the Naked Juice Green Machine.

I have a hard time eating my fruits and veggies, so a smoothie seems like a good nutritional supplement. This one has apples, bananas, kiwi, mangoes, pineapples, spirulina, alfalfa, broccoli, spinach, kale, garlic, barley grass, wheat grass, ginger, and parsley, with no ADDED sugar, but 8 ounces has 28 grams of sugar. I'm only supposed to have 46 grams a day!

What do you all think about this?

For me personally - I don't care about sugar. In fact I care so little I removed it from my tracking here altogether because the stupid red numbers annoyed me.

Who says you're only supposed to have 46g a day? There's no need to concern yourself with sugar intake unless you're diabetic or have a health issue that requires you to manage sugar intake. Otherwise, just track overall carb intake and don't worry about sugar.

    This.

It's worth it if you can fit it into you goals and you enjoy drinking them.

It is fine. As long as you know you are mostly drinking apple juice --- the main ingredient.
  • I pay zero attention to the sugar goal, tbh. I removed it and exchanged it for tracking fiber instead.

The real question I think you should be asking is whether drinking your calories is worth it. I googled and it looks like there are 280 calories in one 16 oz. bottle of the stuff. That's a lot of calories and I'm not sure it's going to fill you up near as much as simply eating a regular meal would. The reason this could be a problem is because it could lead you to eating over your calorie goal for the day if the smoothie doesn't satiate your hunger. Ultimately it's up to you. It wouldn't hurt to give it a try I guess, and if it doesn't do enough to keep you satisfied, welp, now you know!
