I am struggling with a debate here. I was thinking about going to a turbo kick class at my gym tonight, but in some write-ups I read that it combines kickboxing with dance. I am not a dancer, I prefer athletic cardio moves to anything that involves hip shaking or gyrating. I loath classes like Zumba or Jazzercise. I do however love Tae Bo, regular ol' kickboxing, and some choreography in step aerobics.
So my question is this: should I try Turbokick? Do you guys have any experience with this class?

I don't have any experience with these classes but you could always call the place that offers the class and ask the question! Maybe their class is not like that and you would be missing something you would really like.0

TurboKick is the gym version of Turbo Jam by Chalene Johnson, so, yes, there will be a bit of dancing:flowerforyou: but not constant, she also does a lot of kicking and punching too:bigsmile:0

you should look up one of my friends drevans_mom, she is a turbo kick instructor and I am sure could answer any questions you have.0

I LOVE kickboxing, but have never heard of it combined with dance. I hate Zumba as well! I am not one to jump in the bandwagon with everyone else. My suggestion is just to try the class once...if you like it, great! If you don't, you don't have to do it again PLUS you've burned a bunch of calories!!
It honestly doesn't sound too bad!

That sounds really fun! I think I am going to look and see if any of our gyms around here offer that. That is the kind of workout I really enjoy!0 -
I actually taught it for several years. I stopped when I was 8 months pregnant and never re-started. Funny how stopping TKB coincided with my weight gain. Hmmmm....
Your TKB experience will largely depend on your instructor. Some instructors are "danc-ey". Some instructors incorporate their martial arts background. Some are jumpy. I preferred doing more athletic moves. I also always showed the lower, mid and higher impact versions of moves when I could.
If you are fortunate enough to get an instructor with your preferred style, I suggest sticking to it for a couple of classes. It takes a full round (they go by rounds . each round has a set of moves to learn). After a couple of rounds, you will notice that it's pretty much the same moves - roundhouse, back kick, jab, cross, round, uppercut, etc.
If you get a "dance instructor", you are welcome to substitute those moves to more athletic ones or just step side-to-side and convert it to a leg move.
It's fun and I miss teaching it.
Let us know how it goes should you decide to try class.0 -

I love all of these positive responses about Turbo Kick. If I could get you all to do a commercial for my town that is ZUMBA obsessed right now I would!!!
Turbo Kick IS NOT like Zumba.
Turbo kick combines today’s hottest music with up to date kickboxing techniques for a fun filled and entertaining workout. This 60 minute cardio workout Consists of several sections of punching and kicking combinations and is highlighted by a signature Turbo section, which briefly takes the workout into an athletic anaerobic zone. Turbo Kick is an interval based class that allows participants of any fitness level to participate and custom tailor their workout. Turbo Kick is a total body workout experience, therefore each class concludes with leg strength and endurance drills, ab work and flexibility stretching.
I love that the previous poster brought up the instructors style. I am NOT a dancey instructor. I'm not a bouncey, cheerleader type instructor either. There are those types out there. There are those that are more athletic, and then there are those that are somewhere in between.
DEFINITELY try the class a couple times. If you like the energy and the moves but don't care for the instructor see if someone else teaches it at that gym.
Good luck to you. I hope you love it, cuz I know I do!!0 -
Ok, I tried it. I had an instructor that also teaches hip hop hustle, so SHE was dancing like we were in the club, but overall not bad. I was mostly able to keep up, the choreography got me in some parts but I think with a little more repetition I will pick up on it. I was definetely working! I am going to try a class with a different instructor on Friday to see how that one's style is, but I think I will do it again. Sooo glad it wasn't too dancy! Thanks for the help guys!0
