Needing some reassurance that the impossible is possible...

So I dieted like an absolute demon for the last year and shifted 3 stone - it's been brutal. Long period of nothing lost and then a crappy pound would go.

But it wasn't easy. So much is cut from my diet and I work out for almost an hour a day to either maintain or just gain.
Long story short I went to the doctor.

It looks like I have hypothyroidism.

To be honest I'm devastated but it makes a lot of sense. I just need some reassurance that if I keep up my discipline and keep my medication dosage right will it make all these easier to maintain or lose? I feel like I can't win.

Any advice or encouragement would be appreciated.

I would think that finally being diagnosed now your weight management will become easier because now you'll be treated and the hormones that were missing before will be replaced.

Hello! I have been hypothyroid for about 20 years and while being on medication won't actually make it "easier" for you to loose, you will find that it won't be as impossible as it's been for you the past year. Unfortunately thyroid medication isn't a magic pill. You can do it though! Just keep up the good eating habits and exercise that you've been doing the past year and the weight WILL come off!

Thank you so much. Can I add you on this? I just need a little encouragement that this isn't the life sentence I've resigned myself to!

It is possible! :( I have hashimotos hypothyroid and pcos ( since my teens, im 40 now ) and i did the diet alone for a while and lost a little bit but it didnt "stick" The best advice I can give you is ask your doctor to make arrangements to see a nutritionist and your local hospital/clinic to help you come up with a diet plan tailored for your condition. That was the best thing my endocrinologist could of done for me as I dont have to starve myself ( my insurance didnt cover it but it was the best $65 i ever spent) , i eat 5 meals a day and usually sated if not stuffed ;) Its definitely hard work but its completely doable. If exercise isnt your deal look for a physical activity that looks fun and go for it! For me I bought a belly dance dvd and did it every other day and took up yoga with just youtube videos. The weight finally started coming off. Once i started to lose a bit I had more energy, starting doing the elliptical and trampoline at home and even joined a dance studio! :D:D

Dont be discouraged. It may take a little while before you hormone levels will get in check. With hypothyroid its a lot of trial, error and testing. But once your levels get in check you will notice over a little time how much better you feel. Then when you need adjustments you will be able to feel that as well. There is a hypothyroid forum on here called Butterfly chasers for hypothyroid sufferers if you want to talk to others like us

My thyroid didn't work at all. I gained a ton of weight. Then they took it out and gave me the pills and the weight comes off. It's just melting away!! It's wonderful. :)

If yours isn't huge with little "masses" in it, they might just give you the pills, but if you need the surgery, it's not a big deal.

The pills didn't work at first. It took a while. Started with 88, then 125, then 150. 150 is where I got my energy back and where the numbers were right.

Fixing the thyroid stuff was the best thing that's ever happened to me. A lot of people make fun of those who say they have weight problems because of their thyroid, but isn't BS. Makes a huge difference both in your energy level and your ability to lose.

I'd imagine that if you manage to maintain or just barely gain with hypothyroidism, that when you take your meds and your hormones become properly balanced, you're likely to start losing significantly.

Definitely a smart thing you did to go to the doctor and get that checked out! It is bad for your weight and overall health (damaging to organs in the long run). So, nothing but good things can come from getting this taken care of!

Thank you both so much. It's so nice to hear success stories instead of negatives all the time. My symptoms are killing me off so I'm so so hopeful right now.
