My knee hurts while lunging, cycling, climbing stairs. I am a 30-year-old female, 176 lbs at 5'5. Could anyone help me with the kind of exercises I should avoid. I think I bust my knee when I climbed 5 floors for the first time :-/ a month back. I have been on and off the gym. Did leg press, etc., last time.

Well, if it hurts, don't do it!

You should probably talk to a doctor and a physical therapist. :-/

see your doc, but just one of those things sometimes, you have over done it a little and maybe just needs a bit of rest.

You need an MRI and see how those ligaments are. I would take it easy till you figure out what's going on.

Isometric exercises will help strengthen the tendons and reduce pain. Any exercise you do can be done isometrically, you just hold a position during the exercise for 10-30 seconds at a point where the muscle is stressed. Stop at the point before you feel pain. If you do feel pain, stop. Tendons and ligaments take time to heal and strengthen so do so gradually.

Like has already been said, your question can`t be answered here or by a DR. It takes an MRI to answer your question. Anything other than that is just a guess. Been there on my knee pains and in shoulders. And if you need surgery, get it done asap. The longer you wait, the harder rehab will be.

But my advise is, stop doing lunges and leg presses now. Use an elliptical, walk on a treadmill things that are low impact on your knees. Stop doing exercises that put a lot of pressure on your bent knee or knees.

Thanks, guys. I have been avoiding going to a doc. because I blamed my weight and non-active life for the pain. I will see one tomorrow!

Like has been said, probably best to consult a doctor. However, I had knee pain from around your age till recently and just thought it was a getting older thing - building up the muscle around my knee has completely removed any pain I had. I cannot run or it comes back but I'm okay with that. So, for me, heavy barbell (below parallel) squats was the answer.

I'm 23 and have the same problem. My knees make an audible crunch when I walk up stairs.
My personal trainer has told me I can't run And should avoid stairs until I get it looked at, which I did.
I've been referred for an MRI and CT scan but X-rays show my patellas are severely out of alignment, something that apparently is common in young girls but most grow out of it. I have not. Physio might fix it but I'll likely need surgery.
I highly reccomend getting a referral to an orthopedic surgeon who will be able to point you in the right direction.
I felt ashamed and thought id ruined my knees by being too fat and finding out it wasn't caused by my weight made me feel a lot better overall about my situation
