Guzzling vs. sipping water? Cold vs room temperature?

Is it really less beneficial to chug water than to sip it? And is it really more beneficial to drink cold instead of room temp.?
I've heard a few different theories.
I personally hate cold water for many reasons- hurts my stomach, I have bad teeth enamel so it hurts my teeth, gives me a headache especially when I'm hot, it seems like the cold water shocks me.
And after a good run, or when I'm *dying of thirst* I can't help but bottoms-up my water bottle.

Beneficial for what?0

If by beneficial you mean not making a slob of yourself around others, then yes. Sipping is beneficial.0

I don't know about benefits, but for me my water has to be cold. The only time I will drink room temp water is if I'm super thirsty and its my only option. Also I have always been a guzzler, my mom says its the German in me, but I'm also Irish and both are known for heavy drinking. lol0 -

This is actually a thing? Downing your drink is slobbish? :huh:0 -

You can drink uncold water.
Really. It's OK.0 -
I found that drinking room temperature water from a bottle works good for me. I also love cold water as well though and have gotten myself a 16.9 oz reusable cup with a straw....really cute and stylish to drink my cold water daily....I live in vegas and the summer heat here is killer.0

Drink water however you like it. The only benefit I know of is to keep a person hydrated. A rumor going around 30-40 years ago is to not guzzle/gulp down icy cold water when you're dehydrated because the sudden cold and influx of water would be too much of a shock to your body.
For me, I prefer cold water in a glass and drink it with a straw due to all my dental work.0 -
Cold water absorbs faster-- hydrates "better". Most people don't drink enough so, "guzzle" away0

Water is water. As long as you're drinking at least your 8-8oz glasses a day, I don't think it really matters how cold it is or how you drink it.0

Too much water could be a bad thing, but you'd have to drink about two liters before there would be serious side effects. I think temperature is a preference, but supposedly cold water will hydrate your body faster. For me drinking cold water helps me slow down a bit, though sometimes I still chug If it hurts, don't do it, or take it slower.0

It's bad to be dehydrated. In fact, I think dehydration is the devil
It's hard to drink a LOT of cold water, but I'd do it! If your teeth are sensitive, perhaps you should start using ACT fluoride rinse. And make sure your teeth are brushed after you eat. Mouth pH should be neutral, you can check with pH strips (acid pH in the mouth hinders enamel from re-mineralizing). Over time your teeth re-mineralize if you care for them daily.0 -
Cold water will lower your body temperature and you'll use a few calories to heat it back up again. I expect you'd get a similar calorie effect from wearing shorts or no socks.
Dr. Dukan, of the eponymous diet, recommends taking cold showers to lower your body temperature and especially holding the freeing cold water spray against your groin where there are some big arteries to cool down.
Which is one reason why I wouldn't follow his diet!0 -
I chug, but I don't find chugging beneficial at all when it comes to watching my favourite tv programme. I miss all the good bits when I get up to refill my glass. The same is true for wine.0

This is actually a thing? Downing your drink is slobbish?
For some people, yes. Haven't you seen someone who was drinking very quickly and very sloppily? To me, that can be gross. Not everyone does this, and there isn't anything wrong with drinking quickly (if that's what you want to do), but sometimes going too fast is messy.0 -

Could you cite a scientific source that supports that assertion?0 -
The temp of water effects digestive system. Also water in general and when you drink it effects how you digest food. Best to have water is hot in combination with food. Best drink water alone I think 1/2 hour or so before eating. Best to drink most of your water in am up to afternoon then lesson as night goes on. Water is best hot. Next warm. Cold Is bad for digestion. Drinking and eating same time is not good. I have read better to sip. However only when exercising I could understand cold and guzzling. Water, tea, fruits are best eatin alone ... Within timely manner before meals ... Best digested alone.0

There's nice comparison of older study that said a decent effect (decent for just drinking cold water mind you, not actually decent compared to a diet), to a newer study that said minor effect for increase in metabolism.

And I don't think I ever recalled seeing cold water was better than ambient for absorption, usually the opposite.
Here's study where the colder water had less positive effect than the warmer water - though both was colder than room temp.
And I don't even want to know if they attempted to get internal temps while running!

Drink when you are thirsty. Water is the best thing to drink when dieting.
Too little water - fine, does you no harm.
Too much water - can be a problem.
Don't force yourself to drink too much water - Science the bottled water sellers won't tell you.
