Wondering if I am doing this right.

Hello,

This is my first time really trying to diet and exercise. Today is my 33rd day of eating healthier, and logging my foods, and will be the start of my third week in the gym. In the last 33 days I have lost 14.6 pounds, and have about 60 to go . I basically am wondering if they way I am doing this is healthy. I feel like it is, but figured I would check in with other people until I get to a DR. I allow myself 1400 calories a day, but usually stay closer to 1200 (I always make sure I have at least that much.) Some people say it's not enough, but if I am hungry, I eat. An example day would be 1 cup whole wheat oatmeal, w/ 1/2 tablespoon of local honey, and 1/2 cup blueberries for breakfast, lunch is usually a whole wheat chicken wrap with avocado and mustard as a spread, dinner I usually eat a small portion of whatever I make the rest of the family and then load up on veggies. I also have a morning and afternoon snack, fresh fruit, veggies, string cheese, etc. I am also in the gym 2 hours a day Mon-Thurs and Saturday doing cardio and lifting weights. Just curious if I am on the right track, and if anyone had any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Seems like its working for you and you're eating all the food groups. You could review the Canada's Food Guide (even if you're not Canadian, it's a great tool and is healthy) to make sure you're getting the right number of servings. I try to meet this, but typically go a bit lower on the grains and dairy (though I take a multi-vitamin and I'm only low on dairy because I'm lactose intolerant).

In my opinion (and im not a dr or nutritionist) you need to eat more. Being in the gym 2 hours a day(!) is a long time on only 1200 calories and even on 1400. Do you eat back any of your exercise calories? Obviously as of now what you are doing is working cause you are losing, but if you keep it up at such low calories you might hit a plateau rather quickly. Good luck on your journey.

It sounds to me that what you're doing is working for you. You may be undereating a bit but as long as you're losing weight at a healthy rate, and you aren't perpetually hungry, I don't see a problem. Once your weight loss starts to slow down, and it invariably will, then it will be time to reevaluate how much you're eating and exercising.

Thank you guys, I really appreciate the responses. I have been considering adding my calories to my daily diet, because this past week I have been more hungry than normal. I will definitely keep your advice in mind.
