I'm Ellysa and my goal is to lose 100 pounds to achieve my dream goal weight: 130lbs. I'm doing this by using MFP, exercise and eating healthful foods. i'm trying to save up for a fitbit (do they really help?).. I'd just like to say hello!

Welcome, I would say if you stick to eating healthy and exercise you will not need a fitbit. As long you stay focus on making small improvement daily or weekly you will achieve your goal in no time0

Just to warn you- I'm pretty new here but I used a similar site before this and think I know what I'm talking about. I don't want to sound like I know everything. Different people have different ways of doing this.
IMO most people on here can eat much more than 1200 calories and lose weight. It all depends on how much you have to lose and how fast you want to lose it. To start off- read the posts in here:
http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/833026-important-posts-to-read
The most important things to decide are:
1) What your calorie intake should be. You can work this out from your BMR or your TDEE ( http://iifym.com/tdee-calculator/ ). From these numbers you can work out a reasonable intake for you. It's rare that this will be 1200 calories. For instance- my intake is 1650 to lose 1lb a week. A general rule of thumb is to set your calorie limit at your (TDEE - 10%) or (TDEE - 20%).
2) Decide if you're going to include exercise in your daily limit or "eat back" exercise calories on the days you exercise. I prefer to not include exercise in my calorie limit because... well... I'm lazy. If you are honestly going to exercise tons then include it in your TDEE when you work it out. If you're going to exercise lightly or not be consistent with it then leave it out.

dont guess.
make educated estimates.
run your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) to find out how much you burn doing your normal day to day activities.

then eat 75-80% of that number.
exercise if you'd like. (lifting does wonders for the body)

All of that...
I'll add a couple too
If you have 75+ lbs to lose 2 lbs/week is ideal
If you have 40-75 lbs to lose 1.5 lbs/week is ideal
If you have 25-40 lbs to lose 1 lbs/week is ideal
If you have 15 -25 lbs to lose 0.5 to 1.0 lbs/week is ideal
If you have less than 15 lbs to lose 0.5 lbs/week is ideal
Want to lift heavy things?

Read all the links. I know it's a lot of info but it'll help.
I'll second the lifting does wonders...I've been lifting for almost 9 weeks. I've lost .5-2" everywhere, every month. I'm 5'5" eat about 2000 calories a day.0
