New here & I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on how to get the body i want. Right now I weigh 193.6 lbs & I'm 6'2. I started at 275 and lost all my weight running on treadmills & eating healthy for like a year. My problem now is that I just cant seem to get a flat stomach and the last of the little fat on my chest(small man boobs...used to be wayyy worse). My BMI recommended weight is 180lbs so this is my goal. I've hit a weight plateau for quite some time. As of late my weight just fluctuates between 193-198 depending on what I eat & drink. I've never lifted weights once during my weight loss process so far but now I'm wondering if now is the time to make the last 13 lbs go away?? Do i need to just keep doing more intense cardio & eat even healthier or is weight loss the key to getting that nice slightly toned body. I'm not looking to be ripped or bulky by the way just defined or semi skinny. Thanks in advance!

Hi, If you want a toned body, you need to work your muscles. This means weight lifting. I used weight lifting for the bulk of my 64 lb weight loss, and it worked great. A nice benefit of weight lifting is that it boosts your metabolism. If you're stuck, how does your nutrition look? How many calories/day are you eating? What are your macros?

Also, doing low intensity cardio on a calorie deficit can lead to a reduced metabolic capacity. Check out this video on the subject.

Please let me know if you have questions about this.

  • thank you so much! In regards to weight lifting how heavy and how many reps am i looking at? Calorie wise i'm pretty much on the moderate to low side besides my cheat days. I eat granola bars, little bread, lots of water, small portions of other random foods but i watch my calories. I don't go over 1500 a day usually. Do you recommend cardio & weight lifting to tone that last bit of fat off?

I would encourage resistance training using your own body weight. Planks, pushups, pullups, pilates or yoga for your core. The slower and longer you can do those moves, the more difficult they are. Try not to overdo it at first so you don't hurt yourself and give up. If you can afford a trainer or a class once or twice they can help you with form. If not get a camera to compare your form to the exercise videos or books. Don't increase your time/intensity until it feels easy. Work each muscle group at least twice a week. And don't stop the treadmill - although if it is getting dull you could change it up by trying it barefoot, slower than you are used to, on a steeper incline.
Oh - and don't "eat back" your exercise calories. Fitness is its own reward.
    good luck
