Got some bad news yesterday and I'm a bit in the dumps. We have these people come who have the BMI tanks that measure your body fat (by dunking you in water - super accurate). Anywho since last time I lost 15 pounds. I was doing low carb and feeling great. My blood pressure went down and all thegood stuff. Now I find out that 10 pounds of the 15 was lost from Muscle (based off the BMI test) and I gained 1 pound of fat. Now I'm confused and don't know where to go. . I'm signing up on my fit pal cuz the guy who was dunking me in water said I'm probably not eating enough, i need to continue lifting more (I sort of stopped lifting) and to lower the cardio (not stop).
Any suggestions?

Hi mate. Sorry to hear that.
I too have lost lots of muscle by doing low calorie diets in the past!
The advice I got was to do strength training and eat lots of protein.
You can't gain muscle unless you eat a calorie surplus. But you can aim to keep the muscle you've got!
Feel free to add me if you're looking for friends!0 -
Hey, I'm new too. I don't know how much you were eating before your latest BMI but it reads like you're not eating enough. If you eat too few calories, you're body will go into starvation mode and store your consumed calories as fat while living off of your muscles. I'm not in any way an expert but I can tell you my approach. I hit the gym in the mornings starting off with cardio and then on to weights and finish with abs. I alternate days for lower and upper body upper body weight training working with a weight that I'll reach failure on at the end of my 3rd sets. I stick within my allowed calorie budget on MFP but you'll get additional calorie allowances depending on how much you burn with exercise.
What you eat and when you eat it also has an effect. I was a gym rat in my late 20s and early 30s so I'm confident in the principles in the link below because I've done them before with great results.

I just started so I haven't weighed myself this week but I can tell you my clothes are feeling looser. Good luck man! A little focus and we'll all get there!0 -
I'm not high on BMI tests no matter how accurate they are presented as being. They do not work out well for a guy with lots of muscle and often read wrong.
Go to a good gym and have your body fat % checked. Its a far better method of determining how lean you are.0 -
Thanks man I appreciate the feedback0

From the Op's post, I think he did have a body fat % test rather than a bmi test?0 -

Hi. You will need to increase your protein intake substantially. Try to get AT least 1g of protein per one pound of lean muscle. Preferably 1.5g. Try to get the protein in whole foods and try not to rely on protein powders. This means eating a lot of chicken, fish, beef, etc.
Secondly, any diet is going to pull from fat and muscle. To reduce the muscle absorption, you need to be very diligent in your weight training. That means be consistent and try to hit your body parts minimum of 1x a week. Hit your large muscle groups regularly.
Best of luck! You just need to fine tune your routine.0 -
Thanks man, im hoping this site will help me stay on track. I'll definitely be hitting the gym extra hard.0
