Work out routine changes

I have a question for those who have been working out for a while:

How often do you change your routine? How are you changing it (number of reps, days, etc)

I change up the exercises each workout.

Do i recommend that for everyone? No.

    Why do you ask?

8-12 weeks based on my short term goals. Also I just get bored with same routine, basically I do the same exercises just different variations and schedule, or different split.

I ask, because I heard that if it is consistent, then your body stupid progressing. I wondered how people prevented that

Add more weight to the bar.

    Change to a related exercise.

    Vary sets/reps.

    Vary session frequency.

    Lots of ways.

I tend to run a programme for 3-6 months. I might make tweaks (probably with accessory stuff), but it's not really necessary if the programme's solid to start with (and you're eating, sleeping, hydrating, resting, etc in order to do justice to the programme). However, if you are doing a sane programme and want to change things every 5 minutes because of something you read on a forum somewhere, you'll end up ruining the programme and not getting the results you want from it.

When I feel I've got what I want from a programme and continuing won't get me where I need to go, then I'll change.

It's important to look at your goals. Then at your actions. Are your actions leading to your goals?

    Yes: carry on.

    No: change your actions.

What you do will vary based on what type of workouts you do. I just started lifting recently, so it's too early to have a routine for changing that up. As for cardio, I take classes through my rec center, and each class session is 10 weeks, so my cardio classes switch out that often. Plus, I take different classes on different days, interspersed with lifting at home. I'm rarely doing the same thing two days running.
