I was recently diagnosed with Hypoglycemia and I need to eat roughly every 2-3 hours so keeping my calorie intake down is extremely difficult. If I stick to low carb, low calorie foods I end up feeling very lethargic all day long. Anyone have any advise?

  • I've suffered hypoglycemia for years. Eat low-carb, but don't worry about low-calorie to begin with - you will adjust in about 2-3 weeks at the most. It feels terrible for the first little while, but eventually you'll regain your energy. Adjust your calories once you get your blood sugar stable. Good luck!! :)

Hypoglycemia is low blood sugar, so eat your carbs! Don't overdo a lot of sugar because it will make you hyperglycemic (most diabetics are hyperglycemic, that's high blood sugar) and then rebound back to hypoglycemic. But go with low glycemic carbs (whole grains, etc) to elevate your blood sugar slowly and keep it up. A low carb diet will actually make hypoglycemia worse, so you need to avoid that. Good luck!

I am also hypoglycemic and I've found that when I get in a bad place - cold sweats, dizzy, disoriented, grouchy - juice normally does the trick. Then I tend towards high protein, low glycemic index foods. Looking into low Glycemic Index will actually be very beneficial for you. I have things mostly under control when I eat Low GI because these foods have a slower affect on your blood sugar so you stay steady longer. High protein, complex carbs, veggies, plenty of water, will all help you out a lot. Good luck, I know how horrible it can be to be at those lows.

I don't want to start a fight, but I really hope that a noob hypoglycemic reading this DOES NOT believe it to be true.
