PLEASE READ AND HELP, too many contradicting info sites.

Hello all! I'm not sure how this works because I just joined so I don't know if you can see my profile information or not so I'm going to post a brief background. I'm 23, with a 3 year old, a recovering addict clean 3.5 years, and I suffer from depression that didn't start til my son was almost 2. The depression brought me to eat a full box of cookies with milk every night for like a year straight. Before that, I was at a pretty good size and weight for post birth women of my height. I weight 124 and am 5 foot 4 inches. Now I'm 130 lbs but its ONLY in my fupa and love handles. My legs, arms and everything else looks fine. I mostly need toned and I know this, but I'd like to he back at my 124 weight and lose the fupa (the little pouch under my belly button that rolls when I sit).

I've never eaten organic, gluten free, good carbs, no sugar, lean meat, non processed diet my entire life but I've never once been overweight. I'm still not, according to the bmI caculators. But since having a kid I've done a lot of research and I KNOW I want to eat healthy and learn to eat ONLY healthy, for myself and my son and my future health. The organic non processed food is another discussion in itself which I'm working slowly to achieve.

I haven't worked out a day since my son was born but I used to be active. I'm not so much anymore because of my depression. I own the 10 minute trainer and have started doing one 10 min cardiovascular workout a day til I build up enough strength to do 3 a day, at different times probably, not all at once. I've talked to a few professionals who said its ok to split the 30 min workout into 3 during the day because I'll still reap benefits.

How can I lose weight in the right areas without losing my healthy weight such as making my legs thinner or arms? I'm going to try the 1200 cal a day plan, which I should be ok with since we've started buying healthier foods and Ive cut out those cookies once a day to none a day. I know I'll lose weight eventually with this 10 minute trainer but how can I make sure it's my love handles and tummy? I know there's no way to target one place specifically but I've read a few sites dedicated to fupa workouts, so should I just add those to my 10 min trainer every day??

Too many websites say too many different things but this one seems legit and helpful so I'm gonna stick with it. One site says it's a myth that eating small meals throughout the day rather than 3 square meals a day will help you lose weight. Well, which is it? I'll post a pic if needed

I don't think it matters *when* you eat, so much as *what* you eat. If you eat burn more calories than you eat, you'll lose weight. I personally find that I eat less in general now that I have given up grains, but that's just me. There are plenty of people who lose weight while eating just about everything, just in smaller portions. So don't listen to the fad people, listen to your body. It might take a while to figure out what's right for you, but you can do it. :)

Oh, and you can't spot reduce, but boy wouldn't it be wonderful if you could? Heh. You'll lose from wherever your body wants to lose. Sorry.

Eat food you like try to get a variety of foods do some exercise. Try not to over complicate it

Set a goal to exercise for 30 minutes every day. Weights, cardio, or whatever, just get 30 minutes in and some perspiration going.

If you only feel like you need to lose 6 lbs, set the calorie counter to lose 1 lb per week. Don't go less than 1200 calories in a day.

Log what you eat. Be crazy focused on getting the logging right. Eat what you want, but evaluate how it makes you feel when you eat as well as an hour after you eat it.

Thumbrule, if it comes individually wrapped from a middle row of the grocery store, it's probably not as good for you as something you made yourself.

Biggest advice to start would be focus on your logging. That is the downfall of most people. If you have a food scale, use it. If you don't have one, invest in one because unless you know your portion sizes, your calories are just really bad guesstimations. Measuring cups can only go so far and grams are the savior to my knowing how much I eat. I'm sick and I still weigh out my jello.

Exercise is important for overall health but not weight loss. 30 mins a day a few times a week is a good place to start if you want to begin exercising again. In your case strength training would benefit you GREATLY because you want to firm up not just lose weight, so focus maybe more on eating at a small calorie deficit that leaves you at .5 lbs a week in loss and strength training. Strength training is great, use whatever you can. Body weight exercises are just as good if you know proper form. I got a nice *kitten* from purely body weight exercises and light weights with boot camp videos so it can be done. You don't need fancy equipment to build a body you love, your body is more powerful a tool than you think.

I'm sure you can eat more than 1200 calories and lose weight, because a lot of people have trouble sticking to 1200 calories. Play around with your numbers on here or with a TDEE calculator if you want to get really specific. But if you want to keep it simple to start just use MFP and your numbers. Exercise burns are grossly overestimated on here so take them with a grain of salt. It takes between 21-30 days to build a habit, so just so you know, one slip up isn't the end all be all. Just try again the next chance you get, the more you try, the more you'll succeed.

best of luck on your journey!

    and I can provide solace..

you are suffering from post-partum big time.. Hormones are ranging and thoughts are disorganized..

there are several massive emotional mis-alignments going on..

First is body image.. Your stomach flap is a lack of muscle density and severe carb depletion..If you have never eaten any of healthy things ever and weight has never been a problem then your muscle tissue is very ZOFTIC.. Your body has been canabolizing (eating) itself for a very long time.

Which means graduating your eating back into a routine that aligns with your life force...The illict substances you once were taking have disrupted a wide range fitness variable for you..

Such as Food Frequency... your protein number and and the amount of essential fats..are at a critical mass of zero..There nothing to build upon or set a foundation for weight bearing activity.

    SO!

Before just jumping into working out with weights begin with yoga based stretching and gradualy refilling your muscles with low density carbs...leafy greans, legumes, and grains..

The idea is to reset you hormonally first..and while doing so fill out the elasticity of the skin..

This should take 14days max.... thats if you are following a 2 before 12 and 2 after two food energy plan.. doing so balances your system across two horizons of the day.. 100% would be 28 meals a week..

with yoga the breathing technique alone will begin refilling zoftic skin..but ist the stretching poses and motorskills gleaned that will start toning you across your entire physcila envelope.

If you manage to reach a food frequency of say 60% then go to weights as you will have enough stored glucose to get solid..
Skin will still be somewhat giggly as its the biggest organ of the body..there is alot of muscle terrain to refashion and hormones to settle down to an even flow.

when you have gotten past the yoga or have questions about any of the stuff just mentioned... friend me..

You ate a box of cookies every day for a year and only put on 6lbs? I would love to be able to do that!
  • Lol I know it doesnt sound like much so I don't even like complaining to amy one about it because then I just sound egotistical or like I'm fishing for for compliments or even insulting my friends or family that have more obvious weight concerns that are actally unhealthy.

BUT it IS my body and it effects my self esteem when I've never had to worry about having rolls or handles when I sit down ya know what I mean? The cookies were the first thing I cut out a few days ago when I finally decided to start this major life change. I've been saying for months I'm not going to eat cookies before bed anymore because of the stomach aches they have given me, but I never actually did it. I'd find myself at a store again later that day when I realized that i ate my last box last night and needed my fix for the night. It's so sad. It was like I used it as my little dirty secrets and treat for myself for making it through the day.
  • Hi, congratulation for your sobriety if you can do that well.......you can do whatever you want to achieve.

You mentionned wanting to "eat healthier" for you and family, it can easily be done changing one thing at a time. There is no proof that organic food is healthier it is more an environmentalist issue. For you health you can switch from white to brown rice, use leaner meat cut and grilling instead of pan frying. All small changes will cumulate to a healthier life style.

You do not have a lot of weight to lose no need to go to extreme just the fact that you cut the cookies right there you will see a difference. Small things can be adjusted more vegetable on the plate instead of rice, nothing major.

For physical activity build it up gradually, cardio is not only about exercise machine, it can be playing with your child, walking to the store, etc.

Youtube have tons of videos, zumba for cardio, pilates for a leaner body and toning.

    Wishing you success.
  • Why thank you :), I've told myself the same thing numerous times so I can remind myself that I've overcome the hardest thing in the world so I can definitely overcome a few pounds. And yes you're right about the whole organic thing. I guess I worded that wrong. I meant healthier food in general. But processed foods have more things that are fattening in them then organic foods so I'm trying to cut it out. And yes I've already Included broccoli as a side instead of noodles or something else. Its hard for me to stay at 1200 calories a day though so I'm hoping I'll still lose weight if I go a little over and still excersize.

And no I didn't know playing with my toddler counted as excersize cuz i never get sweaty when I'm playing so I didn't think I worked up enough to burn. Thank for your input.
  • Wow everything you explained makes so much sense and sounds so wonderful to start doing and trying and healing and recovering. Im glad you explained all that about my tummy muscles cuz i didn't know about an of that. I have been trying to start yoga as a daily thing but it's usually me alone with my toddler all day so I can't get in until my DH is home which sucks cuz that's not til 5pm weekdays. I've gotten lucky the last few days though and been able to wake up while my DH gets ready for work and ds is still asleep so I do 20 mins of yoga at that time.

What's the best yoga for rebuilding my skin and tummy muscles? And where Wil my skin go once I lose the flab? And how do I friend you cuz i can't find how. I've made a list for our next shopping trip of leafy greens for dinner and fruits as snacks instead of the crap I usually eat. I want salads for lunch but can't figure out how to make them to my liking without load g the dressing on which obviously defeats the purpose of healthy eating.

I think it is wonderful that you're changing to healthy diet (organic or not.)

It's so hard to switch to healthier food as an adult. Your son will be very lucky to grow up eating healthy food. If more people did it, we'd have fewer people struggling with obesity and having heart attacks. Good for you!!! I wish I'd been raised that way!

You can't lose weight in one place. You can work muscles in one spot, but you can't subtract fat from one spot unless you have surgery. :)

Congrats on staying clean, too. You should be very proud of yourself. Excellent work!!!!!

    I weight 124 and am 5 foot 4 inches. Now I'm 130 lbs ... I mostly need toned
You're right in the middle of the healthy BMI range, so don't stress too much about the weight.
    http://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/assessing/bmi/adult_bmi/english_bmi_calculator/results_normal.html?pounds=124&inches=64

You might find some useful info in my blog here; I have a post about goal setting and one about exercise, plus a couple with links to other resources.
    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/MKEgal

If you do the recommended 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week, you'll probably easily drop the few pounds you're upset about.
And if you can do strength exercises you'll get toned, stronger, and lose inches, which will make you look thinner.
Put the kid in the stroller & go for a walk. Maybe he'll fall asleep and you'll get some quiet "me" time.
Chase him around the park for a while.

Maybe have a couple sessions with a personal trainer, and explain up front that you want to learn some body-weight exercises so you can get toned. Here's where you can find a good certified trainer in your area:
    http://members.acsm.org/source/custom/Online_locator/OnlineLocator.cfm
I've never eaten organic, gluten free, good carbs, no sugar, lean meat, non processed diet ... I've done a lot of research and I KNOW I want to eat healthy and learn to eat ONLY healthy
You don't have to have such a drastic diet in order to eat healthy.
Slowly change what you're doing now: less sugar, less fatty food, fewer liquid calories, more fruits & veggies (good carbs), more whole grains (good carbs), more lean protein, fewer processed foods.

If you can afford it, there is some benefit to pesticide-free foods where you're going to eat the outside of the food (berries, for example), but none shown for other foods where the peel is removed (bananas, avocados, melons).

For most people "gluten-free" is a fad, nothing to do with health. Very few people are actually allergic to that protein. If you haven't been diagnosed with that disease, don't waste your money.
have started doing one 10 min cardiovascular workout a day
    Good! Ya gotta start somewhere.
And they're right, doing 3 10-minute workouts gives you the benefit of doing 1 30-minute workout (other than endurance).
How can I lose weight in the right areas without losing my healthy weight
Since you want to keep the muscle, do weight-bearing exercises.
There's no way to target weight loss, though by doing exercises to target muscles in a certain area you can _tone_ that area more than others.
I'm going to try the 1200 cal a day plan ... Its hard for me to stay at 1200 calories a day
If you want to get back to 125 lb, aim for 1250 cal per day.
If you're still hungry after your veggie-filled meals, add 1/3 to 1/2 the calories you've burned exercising.
Eventually you won't even need those.
One site says it's a myth that eating small meals throughout the day rather than 3 square meals a day will help you lose weight. Well, which is it?
No matter where you see something, if the site or person can't back it with a citation to actual research by a reputable group, be very very suspicious.
The more way-out the claim, the stranger the terminology, the more suspicious you should be.
If you have to buy special foods or powders, run away.

The overall goal for weight loss is to eat fewer calories than you burn, so your body has to burn some of its stored calories.
If you find that eating 4 300-calorie snacks helps you control your hunger better than having a 600-cal breakfast, 400-cal lunch, and 200-cal snack for 'dinner', eat the smaller snacks.

The most recent study I've seen talking about how much to eat when is this one:
This study compared eating a small breakfast, medium lunch, and large dinner, [200, 500, 700 cal]
with eating a large breakfast, medium lunch, and small dinner [700, 500, 200 cal].

"The [large breakfast] group showed greater weight loss and waist circumference reduction ... fasting glucose, insulin [&] triglycerides ... decreased significantly to a greater extent in the [large breakfast] group."
In addition, hunger was less and satiety was greater.

    Here's the summary: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23512957

Here's a PDF of the whole article.
    http://genetics.doctorsonly.co.il/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Jakubowicz-at-al-Obesity-2013-oby20460.pdf
  • I don't think it matters *when* you eat, so much as *what* you eat.

Sorry.

I keep hearing that about having to burn more than I eat but that doesn't make any sense because then I'd have to burn over 1200 calories if that's the diet I'm trying to stick to, or 1700 if I ate with no calorie deficit. How can anyone burn more than they eat? I probably sound like such a fool asking what I just did but I'm serious. I read on a health website that it takes 1 hour to burn just 120 calories, so there's no way I'd ever burn enough to lose weight if I didn't deficit my calories. But you just said stop listening to fads and pay attention to my body and here I am replying to you with more info I got offline lol. But it's not fads I'm reading about, it's health and science stuff that makes sense but also makes me bummed cuz it seems so hard to switch so much in life when I've been sedentary for so long. I hate feelings this way. I genuinely want to eat healthier but it's been hard for me the last few days sticking to under 1200 because even my hemp seed packets Ive been using in salads and cereals take up 130 calories! !

And you said you gave up grains. May I ask what all are considered grains and what you eat instead? Cuz I've always been a big bread fan, not rolls with dinner but toast in the morning bagels or waffles or sandwiches. .those are all grain right? What can I do instead? Thanks again.

    Honey, you're confused.

Yes you need to burn more than you eat. You burn over 1200 calories a day just being alive. You shouldn't be UNDER 1200 calories (per your goal you entered) You should be AT 1200 per your goal, but let's visit that.

Your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure, total calories you can eat and maintain) is ~1700 calories, so to lose weight you only need to be under 1700 cals per day. If you do any exercise at all, that number goes up.

To get 1200 cals per day, you set your goal too aggressive for your size and age, and if you're trying to eat UNDER that, you will sacrifice more than just fat. You'll most likely sacrifice lean body mass as well, so even though you lose the 6lbs you'll notice your body probably changed very little.

I'd recommend getting on some sort of exercise program that includes a fair amount of lifting and eat a little under TDEE. It sounds like you need more of a re-comp rather than weight loss.

    Hi;

    Here are my 2 cents.
A cheap bike is a great way to get you started to do pleasant exercise and push yourself harder and harder. it also helps you to create muscle to make it easier on aerobic exercise.

Keep tight log on what you eat, so that you feel in control of what you eat.
And most important, eat fresh food!!! don't worry about buying expensive special things. Making soup is so easy and healthy. you will notice how healthy you eat eating soup as well as being very CHEAP!!

    Take care

calm your nerves calm your senses..Little mother You are in fitness free fall... but on the road to a greater more fufilling life
My name is Dances with Wow

    and I can provide solace..

you are suffering from post-partum big time..

Skin will still be somewhat giggly as its the biggest organ of the body..there is alot of muscle terrain to refashion and hormones to settle down to an even flow.

when you have gotten past the yoga or have questions about any of the stuff just mentioned... friend me..

I would gladly help you recalibrate your life force..and mentor you physical status..

I have 100% success rate..with post partum exercise issues

my name is Dances with Wow

and I help individuals just like you awaken the fitness within, access your bodys life force and deweaponize unwanted body fat.. faster than any known exercise system available on the market to date.

Maybe this guy is for real and means well but his posts are questionable. Seems like the start of a scam.

You're right in the middle of the healthy BMI range, so don't stress too much about the weight.

Someone else has already answered this question for you. You do not need to burn 1200 calories with exercise! You burn at least this much (and probably more) just by being alive. You burn calories sleeping, making small movements, growing hair, replacing skin cells, digesting, and so on. Everything your body does to maintain itself requires energy. Then you add calories burned from daily activities and calories burned through exercise. The "average" woman requires 2000 calories for all this, but of course this is going to vary widely based on age, height, current weight, lifestyle, etc.

I highly recommend that you take some time and read the links provided. Do your own research, and you will learn so much. That is what I did.

I tried every fad invented and i was vegan for years and vegetarian most of my life. I mostly eat organic. I can tell you the only thing that ever worked for me and with ease is as follows:

If you follow the MFP calorie budget and do some type of cardio/aerobic exercise 30 minutes a day you will lose all the weight you want.

Eat all the calories back that you burn off exercising or you will get crazy hungry. The calories you eat back will satisfy you. working out wont make you more hungry that ever, if you eat the calories back

I do cardio on a machine that has a heart rate moniter and i stay inside my ZONE of 123 for my age and weight. Doing this you will never get out of breath or feel like youre dying.

Following the above advice I eat whatever I want. cheese pizza. etc. and am losing 2 pounds per week.

You need to read back through the thread. You have an explanation of what that means on two different pages now.
  • Set a goal to exercise for 30 minutes every day.

I know I've been trying to cut out the packaged snacks, well all packaged foods actually and I've been doing a great job. The thing I'm having the toughest time at is sticking to 1200 calories a day because even healthy foods have like 130 calories. My fave food is breakfast cuz i love all types of breakfast food but every single one I like is high cal.

One question I asked Google and got a few good answers, all of them the same luckily, was can I get the same benefit to splitting my 30 minute work out into 3 10 min workouts throughout the day and the answer was yes. But now I'm confused cuz you're saying it has to be 30 mins straight. The only reason I can't do that yet is cuz i haven't worked out in so long that I don't have the strength or durability to last that long in one workout BUT when I do gain the durability, it'll still be next to impossible because I'm home all day with my 3 year old til his dad gets home at 5pm and I hate waiting til then to work out cuz I either don't feel like it or I've lost the motivation. First thing in the morning I feel like working out so I've managed to get 10 mins of cardio or 20 mins of yoga in while my son takes a bath or plays on front porch.

So until I have the time and durability to last 30 mins, is doing 10 mins at a time gonna help?
