feel really, really silly posting this...

I've got a bit of a problem with the pull ups equipment in the gym...do any of you use it? I would like to, and have tried to a few times, but every time I get up there I get really scared of how high it is and jump off...anyone else? :/ how did you overcome it?

I do assisted pull ups and dips using that machine. I don't like heights, but I don't consider the machine high.

Why not have a trainer at the gym "spot" you for a minute or two until you feel comfortable. Explain that you are afraid of falling off of it.

I used the assisted chin-up/pull-up machine before I could do chin-ups/pull-ups. I started with a whole bunch of plates ie very little of my own body weight needed to be pulled up. I think I had the pin set on maybe 10 plates.

Just grab onto the handles very securely and pull yourself up as you are stepping onto the bar. Once I got to just 1 plate, I pulled myself up so quickly that my feet came off of the bar. That's when I just moved onto doing unassisted pull-ups.
  • I love this question! I can relate a lot! I'm yet to try too but am hoping to give it a go tomorrow!

I tried the pull-up machine once and my fear of heights got to me. I subbed in more arm work on the other machines instead. It's not a perfect replacement because it doesn't use as many muscle groups but it's as good a suggestion as I've got.

This sounds more like a lack of trust issue, rather than a fear.
You wont get over this on your own.
You need someone beside you who knows about how you feel so when you try it they can be there to encourage your success
    or comfort your failure.
Hard to believe I'm only talking about a pull-up machine!
