Hmmm, I think I could walk a few miles, go shopping and then go have a skinny drink with Ali!!!
  • hehe,

I just read an Ironman site and it starts with a 1.2 mile swim in the sea, then goes straight in to a 56 mile bike ride and finishes with a 13.1 mile run. Any takers?

LOL Can you imagine all of us eventually meet up at a MFP Iron Man Challenge????

I tell ya what, being I value my life at this point and have already almost drown once in my life ( Thank god for the life gaurd, too bad it didnt go down like Baywatch, but hey the GUY saved my life! ) I'll follow you from the air and drop you some water, some cliff bars, the occasional 50/50 mix of gatorade and vodka (oops old h.s trick) to keep you going.

Actually I don't know if I'd be game for that long. I remember on one of my many trips to Maui I was snorkeling with some turtles and got pulled out and towards some coral. Kinda sucked because by the time I got back in I was drained, I don't know how long I would have lasted past 5 more minutes, I think I would have had to chop one up for the coral gods and shred my butt like a parmesan cheese grater at a fancy italian resturant on friday night!

Sounds like a challenge but Im afraid of cramping up or just running out of energy then sinking like a rock. Id be game for some biking, running and some skiing or something. Let us know how your training goes for that I'm curious!

There was a 1/2 triathalon in my home town (Medford, MA) for a long time. Wonder if it's still happening? I would be interested in doing that I think. It was part of the pre-ironman series (geared to get people ready for the ironman triathalon). It was .6 mile swim in fresh water, 50 mile bike and 10 mile run. I don't think I'm ready for it yet, but maybe in 3 or 4 months I would be.

I can't and don't swim and can't run (bad ankle) but my dream is--once I get fit and healthy--is to maybe do a century bike ride. That's a 100 miles in a day.

I'm planning on trying to do a 1/4 century sometime this summer, which I know I can do because I've already ridden 20 miles in a day, so I hope to up the ante and maybe do a 1/2 century by the end of the year!

hhmmm.. the distances aren't to differant to the one i read, yet the one i read was a full one or so i thought

That would be cool, i think the most i've ever done on a bike is 46 miles

The actual IronMan is longer than that. I beleive it is a 2.4 mile swim 112 mile bike and a 26.2 mile run!! All on the hot lava filled lands of Kona. There are half ones and Olympic ones all over the place.
  • Well the one i read did say 2 laps for the cycling, but i thought @56 miles they had already doubled it :noway: but perhaps not.

The lava might smart abit on the old feet lol

I just rechecked. They have Ironman and Ironman 70.3. 70.3 are the distances you described and the actual Ironman has 2.4 mile swim, 112 bike and 26.2 run. I need about a 1/100 distance and I could do it!
  • yeah me too lol
  • ok so 2.4 miles is 77.25 lengths of an olympic sized swimming pool...

Find one you can do - something to shoot for. There are "mini" triathlons all over, sometimes combined with longer ones. There's one here, in central Texas, Memorial Day Weekend. I can't remember the swim, but it's like a 5k run and 10 mile bike. My 66 year-old father does it every year - yeah, I have feelings of inadequacy
My husband mentioned he might want to do the Shiner Ride (85 bike ride to Shiner, Texas to drink beer) next year. I told him he could have a new bike if he trained for it. Some races are more "fun" involved.

Greetings Albert! Hope you have time to train for it...I know you can be successful if you're trained up!

Don't wear a wetsuit on the ocean swim...or any jewelry or bright colors...you have to show skin so you aren't shark bait...they don't like the taste or smell of us!
  • lol, thanks for the support Dancer, the site i found was uk based so no sharks... phew...

I wonder what the weight of the fatest person who ever did an ironman comp was...

    lol

Dude, I like my suicide quick and painless. I will stick to leaping off buildings or jumping in front of speeding trains. Actually I like my odds of surving the latter.

    Good luck. I support ya.

I was thinking what if we put a seal emblem on the wetsuit with a big no smoking sign over it? That way the shark doesnt confuse him, hell come up to him see the no seal sign and be like oh ok, moving on!

You could start off small with a Squirt

3 mile walk, 10 mile bike ride and a 1 mile swim or kayk/canoe paddle.

I thought about training for a triathlon, and I said there was no way in hell that I would be able to do it...but then again, two years ago I thought I could never run a mile in 7:30 either. It's weird what your body can do when you push it!!
