How do my friends not kill their livers?

My friends are always drinking alcohol when we hang out, often to excess, EVERY TIME we hang out. I am not one of these people who can just drink as much as I want to every day and be fine, but my friends apparently are. Sure, I have a few to handful of drinks every time we hang out as well, but these people are outta control and I don't know how they stay healthy.

FWIW, I only hang out with these people at big sporting events we are attending, golf or fishing outings, and at big parties we have about once every couple months or so. But by this small sample set, I know they are drinking like this ALL the time.

Welcome!

Clearly these people were blessed with better livers than you were. Just accept the fact that you are genetically inferior and move on with your life.

    Not necessarily...

Sometimes when I'm socializing I drink a lot, but that's only one day a week! If that!

How do you know they're not? People think they're getting away with it because nothing happens the next day. It takes years for the damage to show up. Being healthy is a *long game.*

They obviously do not get nearly as much fish as you do in their diets!

They are, it's just that the effects of liver damage don't show up immediately. It may take a few years to start showing up on their lab results as elevated liver enzymes.

Usually the effects of heavy drinking start to show up in your 40s-50s. Also, people who drink heavily LOOK older than people who don't, or drink lightly. Alcohol ages the skin.

One of my good friends is 40 and already has the beginnings of cirrhosis of the liver. He's been a heavy drinker since age 22. You can't treat your body like crap and expect it to hold up.

This, maybe when you see them, those are the big drinking nights out for them. I rarely drink during the week, didn't drink this past weekend, but I have a few functions coming up that I will have more than the recommended # of drinks.

Get a new crowd. Your drinking habits might also be a problem a hand full of drinks in a sitting is also a binge. Find fiends you have lifestyle in common with and get healthy and good to yourself. Healthy lifestyle and several drinks a day do not go together.
Trust me you can trade one addiction for another

If you only were to only see me at sporting events, parties and camping trips, you'd probably think I was an alcoholic, too.

Except for that most of my days are dry, I go to bed at 9:30, I work out at 6am and maintain a pretty healthy diet during the week. As much as you like to think you know what people do in their own personal lives, you really don't.

This. Those are very much "drinking activities" to most people.

They are actually strengthening their livers through use, pushing their limits. It like weight lifting, but with booze. :drinker:

You will be a weaker man for not hanging with these people, and your liver will probably just fall out.

My childhood sweetheart/I were alcoholics together. I lost contact
with him but know he was the type too never change, his dad had
a bar. He was Navy and regretted it .. drank due to that amongst
other reasons .. I finally awoke to an incredibly
huge person staring @ me in the mirror after I was 31 .. started to
slowly get off that bad ride. I don't need alcohol, it does destroy
some people. It did me. But I turned it around in time. :)

for the sake of this thread, lets call binge drinking 3 official alcohol servings in 1 day ("official" meaning 4 oz of wine, 1 oz of hard liquor or 1 12 oz. beer).

Three drinks in a day is binge drinking?

    Oops....(...hic.....)....

I don't think so. Three drinks in a 10 minute period may be binge drinking, if you carry that out over the course of a couple hours. But three in one day. Thats crazy talk.

well, it's my thread, so I could say it was one if I wanted. If you would like to justify drinking more by defining it differently to fit in your world view, then by all means.
