My family wants fried chicken for July 4. We are taking a picnic to a park north of DC. I was thinking of a recipe other than traditional frying. Anyone have suggestions?
Thanks and Happy July 4 to everyone!

I make oven fried chicken. It's a lot less calories. I soak mine in buttermilk over night before baking.

This is pretty much the way my mom made chicken for our big family

I make my chicken in a Dutch oven but I only have 1 child. I buy a 3 lb chicken

I preheat oven to 500 with a greased (1 tsp Crisco)covered Dutch oven inside the oven. I wash and dry my chicken. I slather my chicken in butter salt and herbs. The next part takes two people. One person opens the oven and using a mitt opens the lid to the cast iron Dutch oven. The other person drops in the chicken breast side up. Replace lid slide back into oven. Reset heat to 400 set timer for 1 hour. Pull out remove chicken from pot and put on tray, tent with foil while it rests 10 min. You will notice that all the fat has rendered into the bottom of the Dutch oven.
