Trader Joe's Chicken Breakfast Sauage...

I made a quick trip to Trader Joe's yesterday and picked up some chicken breakfast sauage, thinking it would be a healthier alterative to the bacon I make the kiddos. When I opened the package the entire kitchen was reeking of rotten eggs!! Even the kids noticed the smell. Needless to say I did not cook the sauage, but I'm wondering if the smell is normal? I will be returning the sauage, but am just curious about the smell. The Sell By Date isn't until 11-20, so well before the expiration date
