High-protein diets like the Paleo and Atkins plans may be better at promoting weight loss than calorie counting, according to a new study released Thursday.

maybe because the protein and fat help people feel more satisfied than eating traditional diet stuff?0

here how I look at it.
If you eat six times a day. veggie+protein or fruit+protein It is hard to have a high calorie intake.so a total of 12 servings of fruits veggies and protein.
Whole grains well they do have a lot of micro-nutrients but the best food for those are fruits ,veggies and meats.0 -
The added structure to those types of diets probably also play a factor in their success.0

They are not really "high" protein. They are really "low" carb as both diets emphasize lots of low carb veggies and an occasional fruit.
Some people do better without fruits and breads and such. Others do just fine and do not need to eat low carb.0 -

Atkins isn't high protein, Paleo is too undefined to comment.
The article itself says "The researchers studied baboons that live on the edge of human settlements" so it's not a human study. There is also a link to a (military) study at 40% calorie deficit which shows a dose-related effect on preserving lean body mass / increasing fat loss but the same weight loss.
Adherence and satisfaction are probably key, Atkins and LCHF eaters tld to eat ad lib typically drop their food intake voluntarily to a level that would have high carb dieters eating their fingers off (Minnesota Starvation study).0 -

I didn't share mine because I wasn't sure it really answered the question. I myself follow a paleo model because I don't really believe it's a "diet" per say. I won't say that paleo is better than anything else, because, not everything works for everyone. For me, I feel way happier and healthier and I don't feel like I'm missing anything in the way I eat. In the past, I've done restricting and calorie counting, and it honestly didn't work for me. I would lose the weight without any problem, but then I'd always be hungry. It just wasn't sustainable for me. But there are lots of people on here who use it and love it.0

That's the experience I've had. I started out with MFP's guidelines, and even at some point adjusted to increase protein, and wanted to gnaw my arm off if I wanted to not destroy my calorie goal. Since changing my macros to favor fat+protein over carbs+protein, I was satisfied on far fewer calories. LCHF was/is the far more sustainable option for me.0 -
Blah blah blah... Calories in, calories out.0

The study which is linked in the article was on apes, and the apes did not follow the Paleo diet. As media stories on studies often do, the article is spinning the study's results to promote their own ideas.
Paleo, which is more high fat than high protein, Atkins or other restrictive low carb diet is not needed in order to get enough protein.0
