Hi i'm jeff and i'm an alcoholic…oops sorry wrong group :)

new to all this so i will get round to reading stuff but wanted to say hi ..

47 yrs old and need to get off my butt and lose around half a stone .. i lost my dogs a few months ago and I've wallowed in self pity i guess ..i was used to walking them twice a day at least so no sat doing nothing has piled back on that extra weight .
im 5ft 10.5" and weigh 12stone 6 as of today.

i changed my diet around a month ago and cut out the main crap..processed foods ..bread pasta and white rice ..now eating healthily at last ..plenty of brown rice - chicken/turkey - quinoa - salads and stir fried veggies plus ground seeds and nuts. fruit and porridge ..even managed to drop the 15or so cups of pg tea and now have around 4-5 cups of green tea instead .. my body is felling much better i must say.
i have a few health issues with dodgy knees and a loose cartilage in my chest so exercise is a bit awkward but i have started to move around more and am doing a few exercises at least 7days out of 9 due to my working hrs. i can feel the muscles building back up slowly so something is working.. i guess the weight loss will be more gradual at my age.. lol

So ..any tips or ideas - recipes etc would be great ..
Thanks for reading
jeff

Processed foods, bread, pasta, and white rice are not bad for you. My advice is that you set solid macronutrient goals and a good calorie goal and hit them every day along with your micronutrient and fiber goals. Eat whatever you'd like to hit those goals and you will be healthy. Doesn't matter what individual foods you're eating...

Any thought of getting another dog? After I lost my beloved beagle a few years ago, the house was so empty that I got a fluffy white Havanese puppy. When it's too hot for us to walk outside together, she is gracious enough to sit next to the treadmill until I'm done. That's commitment.

thanks for that .. i am maintaining the calorie counts so far i think .. only found the site tonight so have to do the whole weighing of produce I'm actually eating etc for sure.
but by not eating the whole processed stuff mentioned i feel much better ..fresh produce all the way for the last month.
I didn't eat much pasta and rice to be honest bread was the main culprit and it made me bloated most of the time ..thats all gone so must be doing something right right ?

If you feel better, then that's personal preference. Avoid foods that don't make you feel good obviously, but it doesn't mean that those foods are unhealthy for you.

i won't get another dog now.. it hurts too much when they go :(

I've always been funny with food and nothing really makes me feel good ..not even chocolate.. i get bored with foods really easily so I'm actually doing quite well for me at the moment ..
i have made the effort and do half an hours light exercise at work every night I'm here so it could all be mind over matter .. lol

Welcome and best of luck! The food diary here makes tracking calories easy - seems like anything and everything you can imagine is in the database already.

I think your food choices are very good - I'm doing similar... I guess they call it low glycemic diet although I only today read that. I'm just trying to stay away from too much processed foods.

read that article..thanks for the link to it .. agree with the guys advice ..

its great to find a place to come and read about personal goals and fails instead of just traipsing round the many fitness sites that just want to get a subscription fee from you.

Now to get the scales out in the next few days and see if my estimates were anywhere near right as to what I'm eating now..
