To me: the average calorie intake for women is 2000 cals and for men is 2500 cals a day.

I know it will very on what people are aiming for but is that correct on average?

I've heard and read about this as being correct on Health guidelines.

the average daily intake for a person maintaining their weight SHOULD be those figures, but seeing as so many people are over weight these days i dont think many stick to those numbers!

On average for me to maintain my weight i eat about 1600 calories. When i am hungry i go anywhere from 1600-2500. I just tend to listen to the voices in my head when they tell me to eat more. Sadly they are usually telling me to eat cupcakes :(

    All depends on your BMR.

I'm a healthy weight and only 5'1 so the calories I need to maintain my weight is 1600cal. So I try to stick to 1200 a day to lose a bit of weight.

This is what WebMD has..... Charts wouldn't copy/paste right. They range do to sex, age, and physical activity

Estimated amounts of calories needed to maintain energy balance for various gender and age groups at three different levels of physical activity. The estimates are rounded to the nearest 200 calories and were determined using the Institute of Medicine equation.

    http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/estimated-calorie-requirement

Did say woman 31-50 sedentary 1800 cals
    moderately active 2000cals
    Active 2200cals

    Men 31-50 sedentary 2200
    m.a. 2400-2600
    active 2800-3000

    Thanks for all your responses.

I just asked because I had someone telling me that it's not 'one case suits all matter' which is true and I agree with that but these guidelines are the daily average adult in take.

I think they are good starting point in weight loss/maintain/gaining whatever your goal.

I'm not sure on the classifications on exercise.

I think 1-2 hour of exercise a day would be moderately active

    Anything over would be active

Those numbers are just an estimate or an average based on an average person at best, it's different for everybody but those numbers are a good start.

So what is considered moderately active vs active. I always wonder about this. I lift 4 days a week and bike 30 miles a week over the course of a few days. Am I active or moderately active? LOL I feel less active than someone that runs 5 miles a day but I dunno.

I'm personally set at 1550 calories to lose (sedentary on mfp) for a 5'7" woman. SW 215, CW 203, and GW 147. So that's only 300 calories below above chart. I am not hungry eating at this setting. I try to eat smaller healthier options more often.

If you want to lose more I would take the lower setting moderate versus maybe just toning/maintaining at the active one
