How many starchy/high-carb servings should you have a day?

I know the USDA thing used to say 9 a day but there is no way...for someone who is 5' tall and trying to lose weight, that would cover ALL of my calories.

i have the body type and diet that suggests i really should eat low carb to lose and maintain, and i've tried before but i get so unbearably hungry. I never know how much i should eat if i'm not trying to cut carbs, just eat well.

i usually eat oatmeal for breakfast because i go for my run midmorning, then rice or pasta later.

any help? a sample day of food? i don't know what to do! i do try to eat as much protein as i can, but again I struggle when it comes to balancing my nutrients within my calorie goals....

-1/2 cup plan oatmeal with 1/4 cup fresh berries
1/2 cup egg whites with 1/4 cup fresh veggies

    low carb protein shake
    1 orange

4 oz of tilapia or chicken breast
    2 cups fresh veggies ( spinach-fresh green beans-broccoli- califlower)
1/2 cup brown rice or quinoa

celery stalk with fresh peanut butter or 2 hardboiled eggs with avocado on top

4 oz of chicken or tilapia
big salad with fresh veggies , tomatoes, red onion, mushrooms, ect..
use apple cider vinegar for dressing
    1oz of raw almonds
you can use olive oil spray for everything you cook , and spray it on your salad
butter spray is ok to use to, non-stick pans work great.
    goodluck

This is a good place to start.. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/819055-setting-your-calorie-and-macro-targets

If carbs help you stay full, theres no need to cut them out. Weight loss is all about a caloric deficit. I think you need to do experimenting to find out what works best for you. You said doing low carb makes you "unbearably hungry", so that sounds like its not the best route for you.

Your diary is locked with a key, so if you unlocked it I could help a little more easily. We are both the same height. What is your weight and calorie goal?
  • Last time I weighed I was 120, but I think I may have lost a pound or two from some new adhd meds since then. My weight used to sit firmly at about 103-105, but I gained fat (but also some muscle from running, dancing and training) in the last year and a half. I'm 19, if there's any curiosity.

I'm trying to net 1200. The scooby workshop calculator said my bmr is around 1600 given how often I workout. Snacking is the bane of my existence, but the meds I'm on have majorly curbed my snackiness. I know, though, that I'm usually so hungry after dinner that i snack and snack to probably 1600.

I would just rather not share my journal, I'm inconsistent with my use of it and am a bit ashamed of my just-too-common slips ups..

Well, I would focus more about being consistent with your logging then. Worrying about your carbs at this point is just complicating it. You need to get the basics down first.

I don't recommend eating below your BMR. Trust me, its for your own good. You're young, and you need to take care of your body now so you don't have health and metabolic issues later.

Eat at least 1600 consistently, and if you add in some weight training, you'll get some really great results.
