Hi!
I've always heard about protein shakes, but really, I have no clue what they do. I can google until I'm blue in the face, and I feel like the folks in the stores just want to sell product. So I'm wondering if some of you would be so kind as to share the pros and cons of them? Also, are they decent appetite supressants?
Thanks!

Protein shakes give you protein, that's the sole purpose of protein shakes. Everyone needs protein in their diet, if you don't get a lot of protein from dairy or meat products, a protein shake is a great asset. A lot of serious bodybuilders need a high amount of protein, and don't bother to cook 8 meals worth of chicken breast! It's just more convenient.
A protein shake is food, and protein does fill you up. So it's as much appetite suppressant as any other food with protein. They generally don't taste too good, and if they do they probably have a bunch of additives and sugar to make them taste good. You want to go with the leanest protein possible, so a whey isolate protein will be pretty much JUST protein.0 -

Also, the liquid form of protein won't have to digest in the stomach, and therefore it reaches the muscles faster. That is why is especially good post workout.0 -
There are many threads here on the boards about different protein shakes.
They are not necessarily appetite suppressants. The protein makes you feel more full longer. You can get the same results from eating more food that has protein in it, such as chicken and fish.
I use BSN protein. Their Syntha 6 in chocolate /peanut butter flavor is very good and mixes well.0 -
I use phd strawberry protein- tastes lovely.
I got the maxi muscle and it was disgusting!0 -

supplements can be pricey...you would be better off spending the money on chicken breast, eggs, cottage cheese, etc.
If you are a serious body-builder and burning a ton of calories when you work out, go for it. I would rather eat my calories than drink them though...0 -
I use them, because very often I have a pretty big protein deficiency in my daily intake. So I use a protein shake to help bridge the gap. They can also be used as a post workout recovery drink, and/or meal replacement.0

I've been looking too. I have several friends who sell Isagenix and Shakeology...very pricey. I've tried the Shakeology - icky after taste, but they have lots of great recipes to try. I also tried Biggest Loser variety from the grocery store...about $10 a can, chocolate was so-so...that nasty after taste is hard to hide.0

EAS is also really good and they don't taste too bad plus it's pretty cheap at Sam's Club and Costco0

I drink Designer Whey protein it keeps me full for 4 hrs if I mix it with water, about 2-3 hrs if I mix it with soy or Almond. I'm carb sensitive and carbs keep me hungry. I also mix it with fruit like blueberry and Strawberry. I recommend what ever brand you choose make sure you go with chocolate the stuff is nasty and chocolate seems to hide the nastiness a much better than the rest.
check for single size serving before you commit to a large size and GNC will take it back if you don't like it. I buy only from VITA COST BC they are the cheapest. I also keep protein bars in my purse with a container of water when I leave home it will keep you from making bad choices you will drive by all fast food places bc you will be satisfied.
Designer Whey Chocolate 100 calories 18g protein All Designer Whey have 100 calories
Protein bars Kashi Go lean 10g protein 5g fiber 200 calories Luna protein has lots of delicious flavors, made for women. keeps me full about 3 hrs.0 -
Protein is the building block of muscle .
They taste pretty good and are great if your not eating a lot of meats etc.
But dont believe the hype excessive amounts of protein will not give you more muscle.
A well balanced meal should be more then enough protein for your needs.0
