Hey guys, has anyone else ever gotten wierd marks on their bodies whenever they scratch themselves while they are excersising?

Today for some wierd reason, just below my collar bones it was uncomfortably itchy, when I scratched it I get these really noticable red marks. It's happened before on my arms. Is it something to do with water?

That happens to me even without exercise. LOL it's probably just skin irritation from scratching so much.

    Its SARS
  • I get the strangest rashes too, I thinks it's all the sodium mixed with sweat coming out of our pores.....I could be wrong but I am in the same boat.
  • I'm not a doctor or trainer but I get them too and I get really blotchy on my legs and arms...I think a lot of it has to do with the increased blood flow so when you scratch, it's more noticeable, but again I'm not a professional..that's just my 2 cents :)

  • yes i have gotten it before, only if i had not been working out for sometime. espcially when i run the itch is really bad but it will go away. My doctor say it the blood flow, so keep working out.

It's called dermographism (derm=skin; graph=write; dermographism=writing on the skin) and is a form of urticaria (hives).

It is not dangerous. It's just something that happens to people. I have dermographic skin all the time, but for some people, it presents as a result of exercise or cold.

I associate it with the body's natural histamine response to stressors and would tend to agree with the posters who have theorized that it is related to the increased circulation that results from exercise. I often get a runny nose during aerobic exercise, and I think it's cause by the same histamine response mechanism.

    From emedicine.com:
"The term dermographism literally means writing on the skin. Firm stroking of the skin produces an initial red line (capillary dilatation), followed by an axon-reflex flare with broadening erythema (arteriolar dilatation) and the formation of a linear wheal (transudation of fluid/edema) termed the triple response of Lewis. An exaggerated response to this constitutional whealing tendency is seen in approximately 2-5% of the population and is termed dermographism. In a minority of people, it is accompanied by itching (symptomatic dermographism)." http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/1050294-overview
