why do people say "bump"

I am new to this forum but I noticed a lot of replies say "bump". What does that mean?

Well, it is SUPPOSE to be to "bump" a topic to the top of the forum to allow for more discussion, but a lot of people use it to mark a post in order to read it later.

As other topics or threads get posted someone's favorite may get moved into a lower position which will cause you to have to search and search to find it, bumping a topic brings it back to the top of the list so it's an easier and more accessible topic to monitor or follow.0
