Myths and a big thank you!

Last night I was having a conversation with some friends (men and women) about health and fitness. I was blown away by some of the myths that were discussed as facts, especially as these are really intelligent and sensible people.
Some highlights:
- Protein makes you fat, and protein has fat in it.
- Warm water and 6 meals a day increases your metabolism.
- I burn 250 calories in 15 minutes on the elliptical machine.

I had a great time telling them about calories in/calories out, macros, metabolism myths and the fact that gym machines have wildly inaccurate calorie burn counts. We did TDEE calculations for a couple of them and estimated what they had eaten that day to show why they maintain their weight.

Amid all of this I realised just how much I had learnt from lurking on these forums for the past couple of years. I felt like an expert!

So I want to say a huge THANK YOU to all of you who spend so much of your time on here to educate people about all things diet, fitness and weight loss. The stuff I (and I'm sure many others) have learnt here is invaluable and has me equipped for life.

THANK YOU!

Newbies: I highly highly recommend you read all of the links pinned at the top of this forum, and when well seasoned posters give you advice LISTEN - they generally know what they are on about.

I heard a good one on the radio this morning. Was for some 'no dieting required' product. Take a magic pill at night to burn fat while you sleep. Anyhow, they said this is great for nurses - they have a hard time losing weight because their metabolisms are screwed up because they work lots of long shifts one week and not so many the next. Yes I'm paraphrasing, but I swear the radio commercial actually said that. So take this pill (not sure if it was a pill, powder, liquid but you get the point) and your body will know to burn fat. Um, yeah.
