Lifting?

I have been working out in a gym for a little over a month now. I basically have been relying on cardio (and diet) for weight loss, but have been also lifting to improve strength. I go to the gym 5 days a week. I always start with cardio, lift, and end with cardio. I have been losing 2-3 lbs a week (I think my worst week was 1.5lbs.) I alternate upper and lower body days, and lift as much weight as I can to complete 3 sets of 10 reps. Just wondering if anyone had any advice or if it sounds like I am on the right track. Mostly wondering if I am doing enough reps and sets or if I should lower the weight so I can do more reps. I try not to pay attention to other people at the gym, but I have noticed it seems like most people are on the machines a lot longer than I am. Any advice?
