Sprain or strain in ankle?

I've stepped up my running lately and I stupidly decided to skip a rest day yesterday for a light jog (the weather was truly flawless....I have no willpower). but the thing is, I had gone for my longest run ever the day before.
it didn't hurt during my 3.3 mile jog yesterday or the few minutes I tossed in on a bike after, but a little while after my workout my ankle felt a bit sore. the muscle right on top, or the tendon leading to your pinky toe, it seemed. so i just wrapped it up, elevated, iced for good measure in case it was a bit inflamed.
it didn't hurt much, and it didn't hurt until a bit after, so I assume this isn't a sprain? it must be just a strain, right?
but i notice this morning the ankle hurts more and is a little instable, which something i read classified as a "moderate sprain". What?
Anyway, I want to be off this for as little time as possible, I'm having surgery next month so this is my last block of time to do workout until September really (tonsillectomy, probably 3 weeks bedrest/no activity)
extra advice, and thoughts on sprain or strain?

Strain involves a muscle, sprain involves a ligament. Hard to say which based on your description. It could also be something else, like bone, tendon, cyst, etc. See a doctor if you want to get it sorted out. Whatever it is, it's probably going to require some rest.0
