protein shakes

I want to start drinking protein shakes to help build muscle/make them looked more defined but i am scared they will make me gain weight as i have heard so much stuff about them.

Aiming to lose 15-20 pounds whilst defining muscle.

Can people please give me an insight on how these shakes work and will it hold me back from losing weight?

Thank you.

You can't gain muscle while on a calorie deficit.

You can get fat from anything if your calories are over maintenance.

If you have muscle to begin with sure, when you cut they will be more define as long as you maintain your strength and get ample protein. You may have to do a few bulk-cut cycles to really look impressive.

Protein shakes are just replacements for other protein sources. There's nothing magical about them. Some people prefer them immediately before and/or after a workout, as opposed to eating protein.
