Just heard Jcrew is unveiling size 000, thoughts? To me, it seems a bit dangerous for teenage girls that might try to ED their way there...

Shouldn't that just be in the kids department at that point?

    I think the same!

Vanity sizing is getting a little out of control methinks.

Aeropostale has that size also. And some Teens/Tweens do shop there. My daughters wore that size last year at 13yrs old. I don't think it's something for people to get Judgey Mcjudgerson over. They're not promoting EDs, they're promoting a younger demographic to shop there IMO.

I recently realized that I now fit into boys' jeans, and I feel really weird looking for them at clothing stores. I'm sure there are small women that feel the same way about having to buy clothes in the kid's department.

I don't think it's so bad. I agree with those who say the vanity sizing is out of hand, and as I have gotten into ladies (not plus) sizing I have OFTEN wondered where very petite, thin, smaller ladies find clothes...seriously. I'm 5'8" and 177 lb and I have three different size "SMALL" items in my closet right now that fit me well...WTF, right!? I agree. I am definitely L/XL, not S. So tiny thin ladies need clothes too. I see no harm. If someone's gonna get an ED to fit the stuff they would have an ED anyway as I see it...

From what I understand, the new size 000 is geared toward the Asian market, where women do tend to be smaller. And I do think it will fill a needed niche.

I am a small person. I am short (under 5'3") with a tiny frame (including a 23" waist). In most of the places I shop (such as Gap, Banana, Ann Taylor, Loft, White House/Black Market), I wear a size 00. I have found J.Crew to be one of the worst offenders when it comes to vanity sizing, and I frequently find their size 00 to be a bit large on me (which I find both frustrating and ridiculous). J. Crew's own company spokesperson even confessed that "Our sizes typically run big and the Asia market tends to run small." There are petite women who don't want to be relegated to shopping in stores geared toward middle and high schoolers. I am in my 40s, and just because I can shop at Aeropostale doesn't mean I should.

The sizing system in this country is so arbitrary. One store's 0 could be equivalent to another store's 4 (if you are comparing Gap to H&M, this is entirely the case). Vanity sizing has definitely become more prevalent over the past few decades. I have size 5 and 7 jeans from the 1980s that look very much like today's size 0s. When I was in high school, size 0 didn't even exist. "5-7-9" shops were "America's small size specialist" because those sizes used to be considered small.

And for the purpose of illustration...the shorts I am wearing in my current profile shot are size 00, purchased earlier this year at a local J. Crew outlet store.

It's vanity sizing. I wear a 00 in a lot of stores now (apparently). When I walked into J.Crew they told me that even their 00 was probably going to be too big for me because their clothing is very much vanity sized. So, the 000 is really just filling in the gaps from the vanity sizing. And I am small, but I'm not that small. My waist is 23 inches and my hips/booty are 34 inches (that's mostly from the biggest point of my booty). Although, I do think my booty may have gotten a little bigger, and I could probably go up a size in pants now (from the ones I currently own).

Same here. My stepdaughter was too big for 12's and 14's in children's clothing, so I took her to the jr sizes and miss sizes, and she could wear the 0's to 4's depending on what brand of clothing it was.

Having said that, I do agree that 000 is just stupid. 0 is nothing, so why a triple 0? Hey! Maybe they should start doing negative sizes? lol

It's not really as drastic as you may think. J Crew sells a lot of different styles of slacks, which are on the looser side in general so while a 000 is small I can't imagine it being completely absurd. I've bought a few work pants from there that are a 00 and I think the fit is more like a US 25/26.

Yeah, my daughter is 10, and she is very tall (just 2 inches shorter than me), so she already wears a size 14 in kids.

I also very much disagree that clothing sizes would cause eating disorders. That is an unnecessary fear.

Yeah, I mean, I have a naturally really thin friend who is 5'2 and usually weighs in the mid 90's and wears a 24/30. While that may be considered underweight, she doesn't have an ED, and she eats a ton. She is just naturally that skinny and small. And she frequently has to shop in the kids section. There are people out there who just are naturally small like that, so I think this size will definitely fill a market for all those women out there shopping in kids clothes.

I don't think it's dangerous just for teenagers, and/or just for those with eating disorders. I think it's dangerous for any woman in this day and age, to be possibly held to that standard. Crash dieting isn't the same as having an eating disorder, but physically it can be just as dangerous, and it still has quite an impact on the expectations of women, both young and old.

No, because kids clothing is not made to fit the shape of a woman's body. A woman can be small and have a curvy shape.

I think its the opposite since my daughter was getting bummed about having to wear 16's.She seemed to think it meant she was fat, and her seeing she could wear a 0 to a 4 seemed to drive home the point, that she is a healthy weight for her size and that staying active pays off.

I agree with the comments in that article, that maybe they should just size everything the way they do men's clothing. I think it would make it a lot easier on everyone. Most of it is vanity sizing anyway.

Oh, that's good! (about your daughter) I didn't even realize they make size 16. I was thinking size 14 was the biggest size. Good to know for when my daughter grows (they grow so fast).

Apparently Nicole Richie, Alexa Chung, Victoria Beckham and Julie Bowen (possibly Keira Knightley as well) can fit into 000. I personally think they all look sickly, anorexic and frail at their most current weights however there are woman (like my bestie) who are naturally that thin and their ribcages, spine and hip bones aren't protruding out of their bodies. I do agree with the statement that, "there are women with 30-inch busts and 23-inch waists out there, and they need well-fitting clothes" just as I feel plus sizes no matter the size deserve well-fitting clothing.

I live in Korea... and most of these Korean women are sooooo skinny that I just want to throw fried chicken at them......^^

I am guessing there is a market for triple 0 clothing... and Jcrew and what ever other store just want to make money so there has to be a true need for them... or a ready market for them...

clearly they are not going to wait for people to get a ED to fit in them....

I just searched and could not find that anywhere. All I could find was that it is the result of vanity sizing. You are probably mixing this up with Abercrombie and Fitch (I think that's the name).

This. I am 40 lbs heavier and 7 inches "wider" than in highschool when I wore a size 10. There is one skirt I have that is a 12 and loose on me...I KNOW there is no way there is a 7 inch difference between a 10 and a 12. Vanity sizing can bite me.

I don't know exactly how it works, but U.S. sizes are at least two sizes bigger than European sizes (even more in this case). This 000 is probably at least a size 2 in European sizes.
