How to accurately record exercise without a HRM?

I walk/jog for 30-40 minutes a day, equaling two miles. While walking I walk what I consider to be very fast - meaning that it is easy to transition from my walking speed to a jog. I jog in spurts, no real rhyme or reason to it. I'm doing this outdoors so when I feel like I want to jog I'll start and then when I start to feel winded or exhausted I pick an object (telephone pole/crack in the sidewalk) and make myself keep jogging to that point. Yesterday I jogged 5-6 times for about a minute each.
I want to make sure that I'm recording my exercise correctly as to not over eat any exercise calories. I won't be able to purchase a heart rate monitor until next month.
How would you record this?

I would go with the descriptions next to the MFP database--if you're walking fast, I'd go with the corresponding mph for fast walking. I'm short with short legs, so I use that to estimate rather than the 3.0 mph I know I'm walking, and it's pretty close to my HRM.
You can also take your heart rate the old fashioned way and find a calculator that will tell you how many calories you burned.0
