Feeling good after running 2 miles

I haven't ever really been into keeping fit but recently i lost my dogs and so the walking part of my days kind of slipped me by .. i piled on a few pounds and i could feel myself getting a tad unfit to say the least ..
So at 47 i decided i need to get off my *kitten* and do something ..
About a month ago i changed my whole diet and cut out a lot of the usual stuff i ate .. and i started 1/2 an hour a day of exercises .. which hasn't been easy as i have a chest condition..with a loose cartilage that gives real pain should i bend or move in the wrong way ..and dodgy knees from an accident years ago with 3rd degree burns due to concrete .. long story .. lol

So I've been at it around 5weeks now..started slowly and with no gym access or any equipment ..i started punching the air whilst jogging on the spot and few other light exercises to get me started .. slowly i managed to work up a real sweat and am enjoying it ..running/jogging on the spot was always easy but jogging around anywhere was bad due to the knee problem ..but i have persevered and today i have completed my first 2 miles non stop .. small steps and with 1.5lb hand weights attached ..but i am pleased i have got to this small milestone :)
Onwards and upwards as next month i will be walking the streets of New York City for 7days..
Any tips on making it to 3 miles a day would be appreciated..
