JACKSON, Miss. -- Making healthy choices at the supermarket may get a little easier next year when food makers and retailers start putting easier-to-read nutrition labels on the front of packages, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Thursday during an obesity summit in Mississippi.

Obama's health secretary said several food makers and retailers had agreed to voluntarily put the labels on the front, and consumers could start seeing the new labels in the next six months.

"It's difficult to read those tiny nutrition backs on the back of packages, which by the way haven't been updated in 20 years," Sebelius said.

I've seen quick nutrition facts on the fronts of some foods and I think this is great! Why hide it on the back? Put it all out there, I say :)

good effort, but my feeling is that marketers will take this to all kinds of misleading levels. "sure, we'll be happy to put the nutrition information on the front. that'll be $6.95. thanks!"

i mean, the only real way to gauge nutrition is to actually eat nutritious food >> often times these things don't have labels large enough to list anything in the first place.

I agree! And maybe instead of putting a heart on things showing that it's heart healthy, they should put a giant butt on there showing "if you eat this, you WILL get a big butt"
