Does weight loss hypnosis work???

There is a mark Patrick seminar on weds near where I live, and my mom and I are planning on going. Supposedly it works for alot of people and they lose over 50 lbs. Has anyone on here done that or knows anyone who has? Does it actually work? I know that when my grandma went to hypnosis she quit smoking for a long time so idk maybe it's worth trying?!

If I truly believed there was someone out there who could tap into my subconcious without my awareness and plant a suggestive thought there that would dramatically and irrevocably alter my personality and behvior fundamentally enough to effect real world changes I would stay as far away from that person as humanly possible.

Luckily I don't really buy into that sort of thing so nothing to worry about so if that is your thing sure why not.

Give it a shot, but it’s not going to make you lose weight, it’s going to help you make healthy decisions when eating leading to weight loss. If you go, and think well, that will work, and now I can eat chocolate and chips, it won’t help. You have to go in with the mindset that it’s going to help you make healthy choices.

I don't buy it. I think it's likely that it's just placebo. You believe that it'll work, so it does.

Food industry advertisers spend billions getting you to buy and eat their products. And in the other corner, a handful of random people who claim they can hypnotize you into not wanting those foods, or wanting less of them.

My money is on the advertising industry.

When this first became popular years ago, my sister (also big) paid for me to go with her so she wouldn't have to go alone. Had a great time. Stopped for Mcdonalds on the way home for dinner.

I was always skeptical of this but I know a number of individuals who have gone to a hypnotist for weight loss and have been very successful.

Hypnosis works if you are susceptible to hypnosis. Not everyone is. It will make you lose weight. However, the suggestions, which only last a VERY short amount of time in most people, give you an extra nudge In other words, it's like a voice in your head, poking you, saying, 'Hey do this." That's ALL it is.

If you need an extra nudge, it's better to have regular visits. However, all it is, is an extra nudge. A better choice is an accountability partner.

My concern is when you talked about your grandma quitting smoking…"for a long time." "For a long time" is not the same as quitting. And losing weight is not the same as keeping it off for the rest of your life. Hypnosis can have an effect for those who believe in it… but if you're not willing to make the lifestyle change… the weight will not stay off. Just something to think about.

A few years back I went for 3 private hypnosis sessions. After years of over eating I found the root cause. That alone was worth the money spent. I lost about 10 kg over 3 months without even trying! When you start to slip you must go back for a " fine tune" session. Never went. Which was my own fault. All in all it was a great experience and one I do not regret.

I went with my sister to a session with a Groupon. Like anothe person said, it helps with "suggesting" you make a better choice. For about 3 months I was on a roll, but then fell off the wagon again. You have to go back every so often for some maintenance. Overall, it is just OK. You still need to learn self control.

Its your money, but I'd say no - there is no quick fix, if there was everyone would do it.

Spend the money on a new piece of fitness equipment, or a personal training session to learn some new exercises instead?

    That's not how it works.

It isn't without your awareness, you can be hypnotised whilst being still awake and concious of it all and it only helps you to do what you want to do anyway - it doesn't dramatically and irrevocably alter your personality.

Of course you would still have to eat a deficit to lose weight but I can accept that hypnotherapy could help somebody do that.

My husband gave up smoking with hypnotherapy - he went from smoking at least a packet a day to zero overnight with hypnotherapy.
This was in November 1992 and he has never smoked again.

I was super skeptical too - but in his case the proof was irrefutable.
Can't see why it couldn't help for weight loss too.

But in the case of hypnotherapy, how is placebo different to real results?

Like I said,my husband gave up smoking with hypnotherapy - if it was just a placebo getting him to believe it would work - how does that alter the result?
It's not the same as a placebo of a physical medication - if placebo hypnotherapy works then it is just as value for money as real hypnotherapy, in that it achieves the result you wanted.

I actually did quit smoking after being hypnotized. A one time. One on one session.( He has since passed away). I lasted 2 and 1/2 years so was pretty happy with those results. Paid a one time $100.00. I walked out thinking that didn't work. I just blew a $100.00. Then didn't pick them back up.

Later went to another woman for weight loss....results didn't happen. $100.00 per/session. If I could find someone to do a one time session at $100.00 I would probably give it a shot; but everywhere I've checked wants you to do multiple sessions at a $100.00 a pop.

I have seen hypnosis in effect so I know it's real. However, it does not work on me because I still have doubts of who is a fraud and which patients are "faking it". If you have the slightest doubt (which you do by asking the question) then it will not work for you. Your mind has to completely surrender and it won't even if there is a smidgen of doubt. Anyways, for hypno therapy that is intended to alter someone's behavior by altering their thoughts it's better to do one on one sessions. One session doesn't typically do it (so I've been told) so you need to do at least a few. One on one sessions are better because they are personalized, the therapist needs to know why you need to lose weight, why it has failed in the past, and the possible challenges you might faces. These are different for everybody so a group session or seminar are not very effective. It is partly ineffective because the therapist is going to make blanket statements as a generalization and you might sit there thinking "well that doesn't really apply to me" which leaves you with doubt which means you won't get hypnotized. IF people claim that they work it's simply just mental, they believe it should have worked so they work harder to lose weight.

No difference in results I suppose, I'd just rather not pay for the privilege.

I haven't used it for weight loss either, and I guess using it to give up smoking is bit different - but he tried umpteen times to give up himself before that and failed.
The $50 ( at 20 years ago's prices) paid for itself within a month. Paying for the privilege was absolutely money well spent.

That's from a purely financial perspective - obviously innumerable health benefits as well

Quick, send me your email, I have a bridge to sell you.

Was the root cause that you liked food?
The smartest thing you did was not go back for a fine tune.

I don't think most people are morbidly obese because they simply "like" food. Mine was a psychological problem from my childhood.
Do you know what was the smartest thing I ever did? I joined this website

Personally I shy away from anything that's based on placebo effect. I know others don't feel the same and that's fine, but that's my preference. If it's basically psuedoscience and only "works" because a person thinks it will, I'd just rather not.

I am glad your husband was able to stop smoking though. :flowerforyou:

Hypnosis is about as effective for weight loss as rubbing mayonnaise on your chest is effective for making your breasts bigger. And you don't need to have seen the episode of The Cosby Show I'm referencing to get what I'm saying.

I seldom appreciate anything you have to say here, because I find fault with your content and am irritated by your tone, but on the plus side, your body looks nice, and I love the imagery of you rubbing mayonnaise on your chest.

Many years ago I did hypnosis through a Positive Changes store that had opened up locally. I did find it to be very helpful with cravings. I'm a huge sugar addict & my boss at the time kept a huge jar of candy on the cubicle wall right in front of me. I was eating just tons of candy all the time & the hypnosis did help me stop. I did lose weight when I tried it. I got 3 personal sessions with a hypnotist & he made tapes (it was that long ago) of the sessions for me to listen to whenever I wanted. Then I got unlimited group sessions that focused on eating habits, nutrition, and exercise. I think that the information they were giving me at the time was useful. I did not keep up with it after I got pregnant again & the store eventually closed down & there are very few of them left open in the country from what I just saw on their website. I found it to be extremely relaxing & motivating & would recommend it for those things. If you are going in for personal sessions, you could ask your hypnotist to include your calorie & fitness goals.

LMBO!!!! Whatever they will hypnotize you to do (or what you'd like them to do) you can simply practice self control and build an intolerance to those things on your own. Just my $0.02.
