MSG Intolerance

I've got a random question. My husband has an msg intolerance. At least, that's what it's called. The last time he accidentally ate something that contained msg I thought he was having a heart attack!! I swear it's got to be an allergy, he reacts so badly. Does anyone else have this issue? It drives me crazy that foods are required to show all these allergens seperately, but I spend hours in the grocery store, looking for monosodiumglucomate mixed in with 2 dozen other ingredients.

Yes! MSG makes my heart go into A-fib, that might have been what happened to your husband. I wish all foods had labels to include whether it contained MSG or not.

I knew he couldn't be the only one, especially since there are so many foods that put "No MSG" right on the label. Ughh, it is so infuriating some days

Also, there is the issue of restaurant foods, I know "The Cracker Barrel" uses it for sure.

My hubby too. He gets a rash on his skin and gets tight breathing for hours after any meal with it. There are a million websites claiming it's all in your head, MSG is safe, etc. But to those i say BS. He has had the reaction when he didn't know it was in the dish at all. I made green enchiladas, and used a canned sauce. I didn't expect that to have MSG and I didn't check. Afterward, his tongue was tingling, his throat tightened up, and his rash started on his cheeks. only then did I check the ingredients and find out it was ingredient #1. OOPS Never again.

Lots LOTS of water helps flush it out of his system if he accidentally has some. It's definitely REAL

That sounds like john, there is actually a glucomate association that claims you can eat tubs of it with no problem and the FDA refuses to do anything!!! It's outrageous

I have a suspicion that it has to do with ethnicity...hear me out....my grandma (step-dad's mom) is chinese, and she keeps a sack of this stuff in her kitchen. She adds it by the handful to her foods. She is perfectly fine and it doesn't bother her at all. A whole bunch of asian people I know are completely fine eating it in high quantities, but every person of caucasian heritage I know has commented on how it either 1. makes them react with rash/breathing problems or 2. gives them strange nyquil hallucination-like dreams. Perhaps this is a big coincidence, but I think it's poison to white folks LOL

It's entirely possible, lactose intolerance is like that, most people who can have dairy, at least in substantial quantities come from places where there would have been dairy farms for hundreds of years, I wish I could remember where I picked that up, but I seem to be sufering from CRS lately.
Oh, and off topic, your dog is sooo cute! He/she? and my Odin have the same ears.

MSG is a nerve stimulant similar to caffeine, so is food coloring # red 40. anyone with an atrial heart, or sensitive nerve endings around their heart, will be affected by these.

I didn't realize it was a stimulant, is it possible to be affected by one and not the others that you know of?

Yes, even though they are connected in this way, a person could have an allergy to just one and not the others. But since you said you thought your husband was going to have a heart attack after eating food with MSG, it sounds like it could have been a nerve stimulant reaction.

He's actually going to an allergist anyway in a few days, I'll tell him to ask about it when he's there. Thanks for the info!

You're Welcome, I hope to see you again and find out what he learned from the allergist! I'm always wanting to learn more about this.

Doctor's gonna have his hands full with John, he's got insane amounts of allergies, almost all of them run in his family, I'll update this after his appointment
