Eating only vegetables to loose weight

My friend told me that he ate only vegetables for a month and he lost 44 pounds. He looks allot thinner than before and he hasn't gained the weight back. Its been more than few months and he has resumed eating normally. He also goes to the gym so maybe that's why he hasn't gained the weight back  .Not that I want him to but I thought if you do something drastic to loose weight fast you will gain it back once you start eating like human being again ?I have 25 pounds to loose and have been loosing at slower rate but I have been thinking If I do the same thing would I keep the weight off if I keep up with exercise?
Just to make it clear to everyone, i am not planning to do this as I love food too much. I am fine loosing it at a slower rate. I just wanted to hear other people opinion

Try a calorie deficit0 -
Try a calorie deficit but consuming more fruits and vegetables into your diet is a good thing and an easy way to feel full on mostly ( with the exception of a few) lower calorie foods. You need other things in your diet. Weight loss is about lifestyle changes that you can do forever not short term . You want to eat all food groups to be healthy0

Only vegetables?
Sounds like a silly plan.
How about setting a reasonable goal, eating all types of foods and being patient?0 -
Look, you could lose 25 lbs in three months if you wanted to. That's not too long and it's not too short if you do it strictly without being crazy about it. No one should lose 44lbs in a month unless they are survivors of flight 815 and are stranded on a spooky island.
Just start a calorie deficit and stop trying to figure out HOW to do it. Just do it. You can spend months thinking about it or just start doing it today.
ME, I'm counting today as "day one" again. I'm going to try to get through this one day and try to stay within my calorie range. I'll worry about tomorrow when I wake up tomorrow.0 -
Not a doctor here... But I would say that a strictly vegetable diet would miss out on several valuable nutrition needs for your body. I think the most productive diet is balanced, something that I personally can sustain. For both health and taste.
Congratulations to your friend. What works for one may not work for another.0 -
only vegetables means very little protein, and that's not healthy at all.0
-
No
Caloric deficit and a well balanced diet.0 -
There is veggies high in fat?
This fad diet sounds crazy. Also the reason people gain back when they lose weight is by eating too much.0 -
But...but....but protein?!
No, bad idea. Why would you do that? Just eat at a reasonable deficit and you'll lose weight.0 -

This would make me really cranky. :noway:0

I did 4+ cups of vegetables, 8 oz of meat and 2 shakes every day for 6 months (low carb, low fat).
It felt like I was eating nothing but vegetables...... I couldn't imagine eating vegetables only.0 -
Why would you do that????? Do you have some medical condition that says you can only eat vegetables??
Any "diet" is ridiculous. Yes, many people do stupid things and lose weight but it doesn't mean that it's healthy or the right way to do it.
Your body need protein and without it all you're going to do is lose muscle while you lose the weight then where are you going to be?? Thin and weak.
p.s. He's also a guy.......what men can do and what women can do to lose are 2 different things. You can't go by what worked for him....men lose weight easier.0 -
Honestly, yes you could lose a lot of weight if you ate only vegetables. A guess a lot of people here aren't going to tell you that because they don't want you to do it, but yes, you can lose a lot of weight in a short amount of time because vegetables are usually pretty low calorie. The question is not, can you, the question is should you?? And the answer is, no you shouldn't. It sets a dangerous pattern that you definitely won't be able to maintain.0

Yes I do agree that a fad diet is silly but it all comes down to what your counting as a Vegetable. If the OP just means going on a Vegan Diet there's no problem getting sufficient Protein and all other nutrients. If it's just eating certain vegetables then it's more of a problem. Just eating Vegetables means different things to different people
Then I was a 333 pound Vegan so eating a Vegan diet is no magic weightloss tool. I now am a 186 pound Vegan but that was achieved by a Calorie Deficit.0 -

We all thought that she knew you CAN lose weight quick with veggies. No one is going to endorse a unhealthy way to doing anything.0 -
vegetables are great...but there's a lot more to actual nutrition and health than just eating vegetables.
Of course you would lose weight doing that...vegetables aren't very calorie dense so you would naturally be creating a rather substantial calorie deficit in most cases...an energy (calorie) deficit is what causes your body to burn fat (stored energy) to make up the difference. So yeah, you would obviously lose weight...but your diet (noun) would be substantially lacking in nutrition depending on what you considered to be "vegetable"0 -

You can't go to the gym and not have protein. Your body will break down it's existing muscle mass with no way to recover. In the end, you will end up an ugly skin and bones. Protein to maintain muscle mass while in calorie deficit. You will be much better in the long run.
44 pounds in a month is 11 lbs a week. Very unhealthy rate of lossing. 3 pounds a week is pushing your limits for a healthy long term plan.0 -

My Dr. who happens to specializes in Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism is clear you need to keep your protein levels up, let me repeat that KEEP YOUR PROTEIN UP and to then fill up on veggies and if you are hungry eat a simple salad, let's face it a huge salad with a lite dressing at 50 calories is a smarter choice than a candy bar!...
I do not know why so many on here suggest so much fruit, fruit is very sugary and not good to over eat!0 -

Try to find some common sense(because it appears you don't have any) and just eat balanced and healthy and exercise and you will lose the weight.
Ok,i guess you miss my point. I clearly said my friend is the one who did it not me and I was just wondering if I do it would I get the same results.I said ``wondering``not planning.I am fully aware that its unhealthy and you are likely to gain the weight back fast.I just wanted to hear other people opinion not to be bashed thanks0 -
If you eat a proper vegan diet it is absolutely healthy and you can thrive and reach your diet and fitness goals. And you will have the added benefit of eating and living a compassionate lifestyle. There is absolutely no biological imperative for humans to eat meat. If you take the time to learn how to do it right a plant based diet is an extremely healthy choice.0

I count my calories and fats. I'm losing slow and steady but I do eat a lot of veggies and fruits. At least 4 times a week I have hard boiled eggs and some other protein. Fish or beef or chicken. Works for me. Good luck if it works for you but your missing out on other basic healthy foods.:drinker:0

You can eat anything and lose weight as long as there is a calorie deficit.
It's like the Special K commercials that say to eat a bowl of cereal for breakfast and lunch and then a sensible dinner. A bowl of Special K is 120 calories, so maybe 180 with milk. That's 360 calories between two meals--not a whole lot! If you then eat dinner on top of it (let's say 600-800 calories) you'll be in a deficit. You could eat a Snickers for breakfast (250 cal) and a packet of Reese's cups (210 cal) for lunch and then a 600-700 dinner and have the same results.0 -
Doesn't sound sustainable at all. You could always reduce calories by increasing the amount of veggies / salad on your plate and reducing maybe your protein portion or your carbs portion. But ultimately its the reducing calories part that is going to give you the weight loss.
I know some veggies are higher in calories but I would think you would have to eat a LOT of vegetables to get a decent amount of calories for your energy needs every day.
Plus...... no chocolate?!?!?0 -
Is beer a vegetable?0

My opinion is this is a horrible way to lose weight. How much of that is muscle? If he's working out at the gym, what fuels his muscles? Where is the protein and amino acids? I'd never take this approach and I'm glad you're not. Muscle weighing more than fat I'm not too shocked he lost so much weight.0

Its like someone saying there going on the cabbage soup diet/maple syrup diet or special K diet!
Just eat less & move more!
Surely though if you only eat vegetables... The high fibre contents would not only make you really gassy but also constipated? You would also need to consume plenty of water... No??
I personally prefer...........Variety of different foods .... : )0
