For what scenario, though? That's my point. Much like others have said, context matters. I don't pretend to be able to dispute any of the studies or analysis in the article. I would however dispute why it would be all that important for me.

So, if you're saying that Meal timing matters based on that article. My response is:

Meh, I'm just trying to retain some muscle while I lose fat. I'm not that concerned with whatever "optimal" means in that article. So I don't really see anything stating that meal timing should matter all that much to me.

At best, it takes second chair to me trying to keep myself from eating too much. And while that can also have a meal timing component, and a protein intake component, satiety didn't seem to be something article dealt with.

I agree, and it's not my priority either. Like I mentioned in my other post, it will likely just keep me inclined to increase my meal size and decrease my frequency... but it's certainly not set in stone. Total calories are still my priority.

Ok, well, as long as we're all agreed that the title is disingenuous click bait.

This discussion depends heavily on context. The bigger issue isn't whether or not meal timing matters, the issue is how much it may matter, WHY it may matter, and in what context?

Are we comparing something absurd like getting all your protein in a single dose, or are we comparing typical eating behaviors where people tend to consume multiple mixed meals throughout the day. Are we talking about advanced athletes looking to optimize every variable possible for a competition? Or are we talking about the person straight off the couch who is just trying to stop drinking mountain dew?

    I'm rambling but:

Saying "it matters" is just about as silly as saying "it doesn't matter" without providing context around that discussion.

I concur. 'Optimal' meal timing for 'optimal' results will not matter to me until I care about being 'optimal'. That said, I usually drink a protein shake right after I lift because... I heard some broscience once and now it's a habit I enjoy and don't feel the need to break.

There's also a context regarding meal timing wherein some people say "don't eat after X o'clock, or it will all turn to fat" or something like that. So when people say "timing doesn't matter" within that context, it's often meant in reference to the fact the systems in our bodies don't restrict themselves to bankers' hours.

They also have time release protein so you can have protein entering your system constantly while you sleep. I'm going to wager that the differences between that and just regular protein before bed are minimal and of no significant value.

In electronics, a resistor of 987 ohms makes a difference in comparison to one of 1000 ohms, but for all intents and purposes, it's essentially the same.

ETA: I'd bet you'd see better results by switching to high quality and organic food instead of switching your meal timing with crappy food.

Yep, then he threatens them with slander suits. There are still MANY sites out there using him as an example of someone who isn't natural competing as natural.

    Meal Timing Matters...

...if we construct a scenario in which it actually matters. K. Noted.

If you have alternative studies with alternative "scenarios," please feel free to post them up.

    Here:

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3595342/

In the context of an energy deficit this seems to suggest that one or two big-*kitten* meals will serve you just fine as far as suppressing protein breakdown.

How much of an edge do you think it would give you to adjust your personal preference to adhere to the suggested timing? Even Layne was cautious enough to point out they aren't entirely sure.

Any edge would likely be inconceivable, especially considering my training level. I have no illusions about that. I simply wanted to provide an alternative viewpoint on the subject.

I admit that's exactly why I titled it the way I did. Whenever someone starts one of these threads, dozens of people come in regurgitating the MFP group think without any critical thinking. I'm sure I've been guilty before, and most of the time I agree with the "group think," but many of us could probably be better about knowing the "why." I know I could be.

You are right that there is more than one way to look at it. There are advantages and disadvantages to different eating patterns. It's all relative to the person's goals, adherence and personal preference. I would never make a blanket statement that a certain eating style is king.

I know of a study in which 2 groups were given equal, relatively small amounts of protein each day. One group got it all in one meal. The other group received it in smaller amounts throughout the day. The group that received it all in one meal lost muscle mass. The group that received it throughout the day maintained muscle mass.

This would seem to indicate that the body utilizes protein better if it is always available in the blood stream.
