Eating at a reception

Tomorrow night, I will be attending a reception, and don't know what is on the menu. Can anyone tell me how you handle such situations. I am watching my calories, so while I am trying to eat more fruits and veggies, I will still eat pizza. I may drink a Mt. Dew, but only 8 oz. If I want Oreos I just eat two. I hate to hear "oh, I like that, but it's not on my diet." I"m realistic, if I know I like something, I eat it, just in much smaller portions. So far, this stratagy is working for me. I will be walk/jogging 5 miles tomorrow, so exercising isn't the issue. I just don't want to get there and feel extremely guilty for what I eat. I also, don't want to destroy what I've accomplished this week by not being prepared. Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

  • Something tells me you know what to do. Scan the table. Load your plate with as many fresh veggies as you can actually carry, and get one or two of the other things. Munch away.

Eat before you go. You'll be more apt to eat in moderation.

Take whatever you want and whatever looks good, but only ONCE. If you put too much on your plate that you'll feel guilty eating, then don't eat it. But know that you won't go back for seconds. So fill up and eat, then hit the DANCE floor and don't look back!!! :)

You sound like you're in it for the lifestyle change, not the diet! In life, we're not always gonna have control over everything, but you have already been making good choices, so just keep making them! I agree with sallyLunn, get as many healthy things and enjoy a few others. Maybe do a little extra exercise for the week, but we will always have days or times that we can't have it all planned out. The fact that you realize it and you're trying to work through it says you're aware.
Keep making good choices and congrats!
  • You've got the right attitude for sure!

My plan for these situations is as follows:

Eat before you go. (Light, yet full of nutrition)
Take a bag of nuts. (They curb actual hunger, so you will be relying on simply desire.)
When you get your plate, get the salad, veggies, and raw stuff first. (Another real hunger curber) <--My word.
If you get the other stuff, do that on a second trip to the buffet. (If its a sit down thing, just be sure to eat all the salad and nuts before the entree comes. Its easier to eat just some if your full when it comes.
Finally, if you indulge, you will have done everything right and you will be physically full. So you won't indulge too much without making yourself uncomfortable. Plus, you already know not to be hard on yourself. Sometimes I just say all bets are off and burn as many calories before and after.

I also find it best to eat slow..... so slow that people comment that I eat like a bird..... It is actually quite self fulfilling to be the only one not stuffing myself full while everyone else is. But I'm kind of competitive.

Emmie-why did you not check with my I know the menu....Salad, bread, lasagna, cheesballs, crackers...Delea is in charge so I am sure some yummy desserts. Eat before you come and make smaller portion sizes. She make up the fixings for an awesome salad so make your husband get a salad then eat his and yours. Have fun tonight.
