I though the gaining back was in part due to the metabolism being slower after a restrictive diet.

It is because and calories in>calories out. Also when I did lose 7 pounds in one week, last weights weigh in, I still drank a gallon of water a day. So I will let you know on Friday if I am still the same or if I loss weight. Pretty sure I will be looking at a loss.

Put it this way - if you got a stomach bug and was sick for a week, would you think you ruined your metabolism? Just start doing your sensible 1500 a day, don't freak out if you have a small initial gain as bounce back from your glycogen stores and be happy that you came to your senses after a week :)

I was sick for a week and ate nothing, and I mean NOTHING. I couldn't keep anything down. I probably should have been in the hospital, but no doctors seemed to take it seriously. I could barely even keep down water, for a WEEK. I would think that might cause some problems...I mean, how many days can you go without water, really?

Point is, I lost 13 lbs in a week...but I'm pretty sure my metabolism is the same now as it was before I was ill.

I once tried the 10 day carb depletion phase for that Carb Nite diet and dropped 9 lbs. Then I immediately became ill and couldn't eat for a couple of days and dropped another 6 lbs. As soon as I began eating properly again, my body must have immediately remembered what to do with food or there was a handy post-it note somewhere inside me giving a gentle reminder. Turns out the human body is quite good at doing what it's supposed to do.

Troll post? There are fats in eggs, meat, and fish. Also there are carbs in fruit.

No! But 1/ English is not my native tongue and 2/ I am new to dieting so I may oversimplify things. For me eggs, meat and fish are protein and fruit are sugar/fiber. Carbs= pasta, potatoes, rice and fats= oil, milk, butter
    Sugar IS a carbohydrate

I wondered the same thing after a 6-8 week stint with Ketogenic dieting.

    I stalled out bad afterward.

I think it's because low-carbing reduces glycogen stores and then they rebuild when you eat carbs again.

So... it seemed like I stalled because I was putting on a lot more water weight.

    I don't know.

It did go away though, I think.

    Thank you for your answers!
You can read a lot of stuff about your body adapting and your metabolism dropping by as much as 50% when you don't eat enough calories. I was just imagining myself not eating anything and getting fatter :S.
So I can expect to gain weight this week but then I could lose steadily if I have a good diet? I would like to lose 20 pounds. I don't have a timeline but if don't loose a little each week I am afraid I will feel my efforts aren't paying.

I am not ready to count calories yet, mainly because I live with my parents for the next 1.5 months and it's hard to count the calories of the main meals. But I don't think the main meals are the problem: my parents eat the same thing and are both thin and I actually gained a lot of weight when I was away from home (studying). So for now I was thinking of reducing the quantity of food and cutting snacks altogether, apart from fruit. I hope to lose some weight this way.

In September I will be living on my own again, and then I will be able to count calories.
you may see a little weight gain, which will be water weight/food waste

as a side note, i live at home with my parents and i still count calories. admittedly its not completely accurate since often im not cooking my own supper but you can at least estimate, its worked for me

    How do you estimate?
eyeball volume sizes, and enter it using similar entries in the MFP database. it takes alot of trial and error to get good at this though, for some people it just doesnt work

if your family eats alot of pre-packaged dinners its alot easier (such as burgers, chicken wings, even stuffed ravioli) since those can just be counted and added using the brand name to get an accurate count

YES! I do mean slow down the metabolism.

Muscle loss slows down metabolism so yes you did in fact slow down your metabolism. I also did the same and I am pissed.
