Anaerobic vs aerobic

How do they differ in terms of how they affect the body? For example, my PT said that I should strive to keep my HR in an aerobic zone because if I work out in an anaerobic zone, then I will hit a 'wall.' What are the pros and cons of working out in each zone and what is more efficient in caloric burn?
