Protein, yogurt, and oats, oh my

I've finally got a little bit of money and some motivation, so I'm going to attempt to get back on the wagon. Again. Fingers crossed. Getting protein cheaply and in a tasty way has always been a bit of a struggle for me(I can only eat so much chicken and eggs), so I'm thinking of trying out yogurt and protein powder, and maybe adding in some oats to thicken it up and have something to chew. I figure having a thing of oats at home will also encourage me to eat them more often or incorporate them as filler in more recipes.

However, I've never had protein powder before. I know you can get different flavors, but I'm clueless as to what I should be looking for. Can anyone give me a rundown of like, brands and types? I know there are whey and soy protein powders, are there ingredients I should look for and avoid? Does one flavor tend to be better than others?

Also, does the pseudo parfait seem like a decent idea? I may be getting some fruits, too.

sounds like a good idea to me, like these recipes:

i've never added protein per say, but the addition of ground flax helps keep you fuller.

i personally bought "whole gains" protein, at GNC the last time i was in...and really like it. don't think i can afford it without the sale though. have been looking into cellucor whey proteins, have heard great things. also would like to hear what others say about proteins...it can all be so confusing.

I have been eating Greek yogurt (thicker, more protein), 57g(1/4 cup) each of plain and vanilla non-fat, with 200g mixed raspberries/strawberries, 1tbsp wheat germ and 13g high protein oats and chocolate granola.

This totals 235cal, 3 fat, 18 protein and 9 fiber. So basically I say, go for it!

I've been eating a lot of plain, low-fat yogurt mixed with simple granola as a breakfast or lunch meal. It works great and doesn't incur too many calories. As to the protein powder, I use that as well. It's great to mix up with an electric emulsifier. I drink a cup when I need to take my vitamins and medicine once a day. I count it as a meal usually.

I hear you. I don't even really like chicken.

I make refrigerator oats with 100g fage 2%, 1/3c 2% milk, 40g oats, and 31g ON vanilla. I sometimes add other tasty things like berries, almonds, or PB2. The base recipe has 382cal, 37g carbs, 8g fat, and 44g protein.
