Heart rate monitor

What is a good monitor to start off with? Is there a difference between a basic monitor and the more advanced/expensive ones?
I actually do not have one, and I'm trying to figure out what ones actually do work ... reading reviews leaves me mixed because some people like it and then some people think its rubbish.
Can anyone recommend one they use?
Thank you

a lot of people like Polar FT4 or FT7. I had FT4 for short period of time before it broke. I have an FT60 now but you have to buy the matching GPS sensor separately. Unfortunately that version seems discontinued.
my runner friends get those fancy Garmin with GPS built it and other stuff...0 -
I have had the FT4 for awhile now and I really like it. I would recommend it because it is cheaper, tracks calories, and logs your sessions as well.0
